"Lilo & Stitch" becomes the second highest box office in 2025 with "Sinners"

"Lilo & Stich" and "Mission: Impossion-Insport-The Final Estimates" once again dominated the box office after the refueling record Memorial Day weekend. This weekend, there are also several new movies in theatres in the United States and Canada, including Sony's family-friendly "Karate Boy: Legend" and the A24 horror movie "Bring Her Back".

According to Studio estimates, it adds up to a reliable $149 million post-holiday weekend, up more than 120% from the same period last year.

Disney's live hybrid "Lilo & Stitch" once again won the first place in $63 million for 4,410 locations in North America. By "The Sinner", becoming the second highest movie of the year, selling with $280.1 million in domestic tickets, which is enough to be the second highest movie. Globally, its total operations are $610 million. Meanwhile, "Sinner" still had $5.2 million in shares on the seventh weekend, rising to $267.1 million domestically and $350.1 million globally.

The eighth "Task: Impossible" movie also replicated in second place, with $27.3 million in 3,861 locations. Like "Lilo & Stitch", its open volume fell by 57%. $122.6 million of domestic tickets were sold, which is consistent with the previous two issues. However, the reported production budget is $400 million, and profitability is also a good choice. Internationally, it added $76.1 million (including $25.2 million that just opened in China), and its global total reached $353.8 million.

“It’s a year of long-term playability,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “A word of mouth and strong holdings are more important than the open weekend dollar.”

The leading newcomer is Sony's Karate Boy: Legend, with an estimated $21 million in 3,809 locations. The film brings Jackie Chan and Ralph MacChio together to train a new kid, Prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang). Chan starred in the 2010 original 1984, while MacChio found a new generation of fans in the series "Cobra Kai," which just ended six seasons.

Reviews may be mixed, but the opening weekend audience brought powerful A-Cinemascore and 4.5 stars to the PG-13-rated movie on Post Trak. It also reportedly cost only $45 million in production, and it took a few weeks until a new family-friendly movie arrived. "Karate Boy: Legend" opened earlier internationally, with a total of US$47 million worldwide.

The fourth place received “The Final Destination: Bloodline” and received $10.8 million on the third weekend. The film is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, with no consideration of inflation, and a global $229.3 million.

Another big newcomer on the weekend "bring her back" ranked in the top five with $7.1 million for 2,449 screens. The film, which is a foster mother by Sally Hawkins and has some disturbing plans, is a sophomore album by twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who produced the 2023 horror breakthrough “Talk Me.” It won the rare horror B+ Cinemascore, essentially the only new movie in the genre until it was released on June 20th "28 Years Later".

A new Wes Anderson film, Phoenician Spine, also made its debut this weekend in New York and Los Angeles, where it made $270,000. It expands nationwide next weekend.

The summer box office forecast is still promising, although there is still a long way to go to achieve the $4 billion target (this is the big replica specification that only "Barbenheimer" has surpassed in the summer). According to COMScore, it is expected to generate revenue of $973 million in May, a 75% increase from May 2024.
