Liam Delap: Chelsea signed acclaimed striker for £30m deal

The club confirmed on Wednesday that Chelsea strengthened their striker with a signing of 22-year-old forward Liam Delap of Ipswich Town.

Sources told ESPN that the transfer has been completed by about £30 million ($400.6 million). Delap has signed a contract with West London Club until the end of the 2030-31 season.

Delap, 22, is a subject of interest to Manchester United, Newcastle United and Everton, but the prospect of playing with former Manchester City teammate Cole Palmer next season, his decision is still about Chelsea despite long-term interest.

ESPN reported that Delap was waiting for its final choice until Manchester United's Europa League final clash with Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao due to victory and defeat, Rubin Amorim was around.

If United beat the Spurs to cancel the Europa League trophy, they will have a place in the Champions League next season, but their failure to Ange Postecoglou's side means United will not compete in any European game next season, and sources say the reality Delap has objected to Chelsea.

The City Academy graduate scored 12 goals in Ipswich's 37 Premier League games, but his contribution was not enough to keep them at their highest level.

"I understand the club's status and can see the trajectory of these players and head coaches. This will be an incredible place for me to develop and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophys."

Delap has played in England age group from under 16 to under 21, but he has not made his debut in senior yet. Delap is the son of former Stoke midfielder Rory, whose performance this season has been nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Year Award.

The Winchester-born striker helped make up for the club's pre-World Cup offensive shortage at Chelsea, with Nicolas Jackson scoring 10 league goals this season, the only outstanding striker.

After Ipswich confirmed the exit, he shared Delap's farewell message.

“I want to express my gratitude to everyone in Ipswich town for everything they did for me during their time at the club.

“We didn’t achieve our ultimate goal, but the welcome I received and the continued support of the manager, his staff and supporters meant this was the ideal environment for playing regular Premier League football for the first time in my career.

“The club is very excited about the future and I believe only Ipswich town returns to the Premier League again and I will be long. I will get support from afar.

"I will never forget my time at the club. Thank you for everything."
