Sources told ESPN that Liam Delap's future will be clear after the Europa League final, with Chelsea looking to sign Ipswich forward, determined by Manchester United's clash with Totterham Hotspur on Wednesday.
Delap, 22, will leave Ipswich after just one season on Portman Road as the team is relegated from the Premier League and he can leave if his rival club triggers his £30m ($40m) release clause.
ESPN reported last month that United set Delap as a priority for the new center this summer, ahead of Sporting CP's Viktor Gyökeres and Victor Osimhen, who have already loaned the season on Galatasaray in Napoli, while Old Trackord keeps the old Trafford's determination to sign former Manchester City's Youngster.
Manchester United realizes Chelsea's long-term interest in Delap. Delap scored 12 goals for Kieran McKenna's Ipswich in 36 Premier League games, sources told ESCN that although Manchester United is the leader in signing, Chelsea offers European football a European club position next season and that Chelsea's ability will enhance European club position if the United beat Spurs in the Europa League.
United have endured their worst league campaign since relegated from top matches in 1973-74, and only next season will they win the European Championship and claim the Champions League is reserved for the winner. But conference league finalist Chelsea can beat Nottingham Forest next season by defeating Nottingham Forest on the city ground on Sunday.
If United beat the Spurs in Bilbao and qualify for the Champions League, sources said Drapp is likely to head to Old Trafford.
But while sources also say United have the ability to sign Drapp and Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, whether they qualify for the Champions League or not, European football lacks European football if it fails against the Spurs, which will make Chelsea the player’s pole position.
City, which uninstalled Delap for the initial £15m last year, inserted a £40m buyback option into the deal, but sources said the Atihad Club did not plan to activate the option, leaving United and Chelsea's pathways almost the same for Chelsea to fight his signature.
