"President Trump advocated control of the center, made himself chairman and cleared his board and administration to support his loyalists, so many artists (although not all) disconnected from the agency," wrote Bernstein's surviving child in a guest essay in the New York Times. "Many friends and colleagues have urged us (rights holders of our father's music) to withdraw his work from Saturday's celebration show."

In response to the controversy, Bernstein's children argued that their father wanted his music to be played at the Kennedy Center.
"We ask ourselves: What will our father do?" the Bernstein child wrote. "In our hearts, we already know the answer. He will hear his music. But we believe that we can express our strong statements by having people hear his music in that space as an audible condemnation of Mr. Trump's ugly policies. We plan to donate measures that we have gained from the upcoming Kennedy Civil Liberties Union."
They continued: "Today, President Trump is shocked and stinging at the ruthless attacks of civil rights and the Constitution itself, and we can find comfort in the music of his father. His notes call for the courage to be ourselves, to express ourselves, to express ourselves, and to be the one Americans have always longed for freedom: freedom."
