Los Angeles County District Atty. Nathan Hochman on Friday announced arson charges against six men who set fires around Los Angeles County following the Palisades and Eaton fires.
A man who posed as a firefighter to sneak into an evacuation zone in Malibu also was arrested, Hodgman said.
The arson defendants set fire to couches, trash, an abandoned Christmas tree and a dumpster on Jan. 13 and 14 as emergency officials prepared for a dangerous wind storm that threatened to intensify the blaze, which had already begun. More than 10,000 homes have been destroyed and at least 25 people have died in Los Angeles County since January 7.
Pamela Johnson, a spokesperson for the District Attorney's Office, said none of the arsons are related to any larger wildfires across the county.
"For anyone who thinks they can use this disaster as a cover for criminal activity, please be warned: You will be caught and you will be held accountable," Hochman said in a statement. "Citizens of this county Deserve safety and justice, especially after such unprecedented devastation."
Officials said the incidents occurred in Los Angeles, Southgate, Huntington Park, Hawthorne and Compton. Prosecutors charged Manuel Rodriguez, 35, with murder on Jan. 13 at the Donald Bruce Kaufman Library on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood. A fire was set in a dumpster behind the Bruce Kaufman Library, just days after the community was threatened by the changing direction of the Palisades Fire.
No one was injured in the ensuing arson incident. While there has been much speculation about the cause of the recent fires, investigators have only publicly discussed the possibility that the Kenneth Fire near the Los Angeles-Ventura County border was intentionally set. Juan Sierra, 33, has been named a "person of interest" in the case, but charges have not yet been filed.
Hochman on Friday also announced charges against 34-year-old Ivan Cedric Reed, accused of impersonating a firefighter and infiltrating a Malibu evacuation zone. On Jan. 14, sheriff's deputies found Reed on Clifftop Way in Malibu wearing a "yellow fireman's jacket" and in possession of a "paramedic radio," according to a press release from the district attorney. Reed claimed to be a firefighter but was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Reed was charged with receiving stolen property, impersonating a firefighter, unlawful use of a badge and entering a closed disaster area.
Regional police have announced dozens of arrests on robbery and arson charges since the fires broke out. Hochman filed a similar lawsuit Monday against nine defendants.
Detective Chief Alan Hamilton said a burglary suspect disguised as a firefighter was also arrested at the Palisades Fire Evacuation Zone on Jan. 12. Two men impersonated Los Angeles firefighters and conspired to commit a burglary, a case has been filed. Prosecutor. for the Los Angeles Police Department.
