Head coach Greg Vanney has been signed to a multi-year contract by defending MLS Cup champion La Galaxy, despite their historic 13 games without a win to start the season.
Although the club has won 10 losses in the worst start of a season in MLS history, the Galaxy announced the deal on Friday.
Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said the decision to keep Vanney for a long time last year. Vanney is a two-time MLS Cup winning coach who had previously signed a contract only this season.
"Greg is one of the most respected and successful coaches in MLS history and we are excited to continue under his leadership," Kuntz said in a statement.
“While the results of this season do not reflect our standards, this is the decision we made after the 2024 MLS Cup victory, we are confident in the program we built with Greg, and we have a clear path to return to the MLS championship level. Greg’s commitment to development, culture and high standards, high standards are unwilling.”
Vanney led Galaxy to their MLS record sixth league title last season, a stunning turnaround, a team that has had little success in the past decade since winning the 2014 championship. Los Angeles finished second in the Western Conference before winning streak in the playoffs and defeating New York Red Bull 2-1 in the MLS Cup final.
Fanny also won the MLS Cup and reached three MLS Cup finals during his long term in Toronto before the former Galaxy defender returned to his native Southern California in 2021. Galaxy made the playoffs in both seasons with Van Nie’s two heads.
But the new season is horrible for the Galaxy without star midfielder Riqui Puig, who led the MLS last season and tore his knee ligament in the conference finals.
Forwards Dejan Joveljic, midfielder Mark Delgado and MLS Cup MVP Gastón Brugman were required to be moved out during the offseason due to the salary cap limit.
Designated players Joseph Paintsil, Gabriel Pec and Marco Reus are all back in the new season, but everyone is struggling with injuries - the Galaxy has only scored three points in 13 games. Galaxy has won a victory this season, beating Herediano 4-1 in the CCONCACAF Champions League match in March.
The Galaxy lost 1-0 to Kansas City earlier this month, though it didn't give up shooting, while Yoshida's Maya Yoshida landed on his own with her own goal. Los Angeles then matched the worst failure distance in MLS history with the Red Bulls 7-0.
The Galaxy lost 3-2 to Philadelphia on Wednesday. They hosted Los Angeles Football Club on Sunday night in the El Tráfico competitive game.
