Knorr-Bremse wins railway contract in China

Germany-based Knorr-Bremse has signed a railway contract with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) to provide braking systems for subway projects in several cities.

The Knorr-Bremse will provide complete braking systems for 1,000 subway vehicles in at least five cities.

These systems include electric brake control systems, transformation equipment and actuators for fleets in Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Wuhao, Wuhan, Shenzhen and Ningbo.

The total order volume of these contracts is estimated to be around €50 million, covering about 150 trains in a few years.

Knorr-Bremse is still looking for export opportunities from China.

The company has recently been awarded a contract to provide braking systems for over 100 CRRC locomotives in Kazakhstan.

These systems are being customized and manufactured in Suzhou's Knorr-Bremse facility and its joint venture with CRRC.

Dr. Nicolas Lange, member of the Knorr-Bremse Executive Committee, said: “Knorr-Bremse has become a highly reliable partner in China’s railway industry for more than 30 years.

“Our latest success reflects our deep understanding of the needs of our Chinese customers. These new projects in the metro area show that we can benefit from the dynamic development of China’s railway industry even in challenging times.”

Knorr-Bremse is providing braking systems for new light rail vehicles (LRVs), designed to be exported to Astana in Kazakhstan and Belo Horizonte in Brazil.

In 2023, Knorr-Bremse received an order from CRRC to install brake systems on 36 trains and to carry out 288 railway vehicles for Chengdu Line 13, which connects Tianfu International Airport and other locations to 140 km/h.

In addition, the company is enhancing its global operations through its strategic plan BOOST, which includes upgrading its major manufacturing plants in Suzhou and Palwar, India.

In March this year, the Hitachi Railway recruited Knorr-Bremse to provide system technology to fleets of up to 30 subway trains in Rome.

These trains will feature a Knorr-Bremse brake, coupling and inlet system.
