Kimi Antonelli is surprised Miami GP Sprint Pole

Miami - Mercedes Wunderkind rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli defeated McLaren's driver in Sprint in Miami, becoming the youngest pole position for any Formula One car.

Antonelli, 18, beat champion leader Oscar Piastri with a 0.045 second victory, the first F1 match he competed in his young career.

Antonelli replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes this year and has been prompted for something great.

"Yes companion! Come on! Come on." Anthonyri said on the radio after fixing the pole position.

In an interview after the meeting, he said it was a “hard” qualification.

"I've felt really good since this morning and I'm confident to get into the qualifying round," Antonley said. "The last lap was strong. I basically put everything together and it's all good and I'm really happy to get the first shot.

"Tomorrow will be happy starting from the front row. It will be a different feeling, but I can't wait to see how we do it in the sprint and then in the qualifications."

The youngest pole ever was Sebastian Vettel, 21, before playing in the Italian Grand Prix with Toro Rosso at the 2008 Grand Prix.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said what kind of pole it is.

"It's about the trajectory. It's not just a pole in a sprint, or a pole in tomorrow, or a pole in the future, he did it, he's the fastest."

Anthonyri will start before Piastri and Lando Norris.

"We can still fight in the sprint tomorrow. Very happy," Piastri said.

"We have a chance to unlock a bit bigger pace, so I'll still feel positive. I'm going to try to get a spot in Sprint before I can get into a big position."

New father Max Verstappen missed media day Thursday for the birth of his first daughter Lily, with teammate George Russell leading fourth in Antonelli.

With only one driver in the high-end battle of the sprint, Vestapon's teammate Yuki Tsunoda failed to stand out from the SQ1 meeting. Japanese drivers will start at 18th.

Ferrari will be ranked sixth and seventh against Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

Williams driver Alex Albon finished eighth, while impressive racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar continued to do his most recent strong run as ninth.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso still has no point of view this season, bringing his team a tenth place in morale improvement.

Nico Hulkenberg won an impressive 11th place for the Sauber team – Tsunoda's elimination from SQ1 was the only major surprise.

There was an angry broadcast message targeting his team's alpine driver Jack Doohan at the opening ceremony.

Doohan complained that his hopes of entering SQ1 were ruined by the angle he released from the garage before the last row.

When teammate Pierre Gasly emerged from Pit Lane next to him, Doohan lost his precious time in trying to re-tune the car.

"Partner, this is unacceptable. It is unacceptable," Doohan said. "If you are going to give him to me, you have to make sure he is ready.

Doohan's future is still unclear beyond this week, with Alpine Reserve driver Franco Colapinto waiting on his wings.
