President Donald Trump's second inaugural address offered clues about where he will focus and how he sees the country.
"America's golden age begins now," Trump said. "Starting today, our country will prosper."
He said the country would be "the envy of the world" and "will not be taken advantage of."
Trump pledged during his campaign to push for tariffs on foreign goods, expand drilling and deport immigrants without legal status in the country.
He said he would sign a series of executive orders focusing on immigration and the economy. Trump said he would declare a "national emergency on the southern border," halt immigration and deport "criminal immigrants."
"We're going to do this at an unprecedented level," Trump promised.
Trump also said he would declare a "national energy emergency," repeal the Green New Deal and electric vehicle mandates, and create an "IRS" to impose tariffs on goods from other countries.
Trump argued the measures would help build American "prosperity," although he said after the election that lowering prices would be "difficult." Prices and inflation continue to prove to be a top concern for many Americans.
Cultural issues and immigration issues have always been the driving force behind Trump's political rise. Immigration has been a top priority for his base. In the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, 4 in 10 Republicans support mass deportations, with more than half expressing strong support.
Trump said he would make it U.S. policy that there are only two genders — "male and female." LGBTQ+ rights are a hot topic in the 2024 presidential campaign.
Trump has also promised political retaliation, but it's unclear to what extent or whether he will follow through on that promise.
In his speech, Trump vowed that "the scales of justice will be rebalanced" and said "weaponization" will end.
He also promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America, Alaska's Denali Mountains to Mount McKinley, and that the country would seize control of the Panama Canal.
“My legacy will be as a peacemaker and a unifier,” Trump said. “That’s what I want to be — a peacemaker and a unifier.”
Of course, many of the things Trump calls for are not supported by all Americans. The latest NPR poll, for example, found that Americans are divided on deportations, saying tariffs will hurt the economy more than help.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
