Kamala Harris' potential next move: A book

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris has a number of options for her next move, including a possible run for California governor in 2026 and president in 2028, but first it could start with writing a book, according to six people familiar with internal discussions.

Harris, who will exit elected office for the first time in more than two decades on Monday, has decided to write a book, two of them said. Others said the topic was under discussion.

With President Joe Biden exiting the race in July, Harris entered the 2024 presidential race and quickly locked up the Democratic nomination, but lost the general election to former President Donald Trump. Since conceding to Trump, Harris has spoken little publicly about her 107-day sprint to try to retain the presidency for her party. Her written record not only provides a look back at the past, but also helps shape her future.

“Kamala Harris is poised to land the largest vice presidential book deal in history,” said Keith Urbahn, president and co-founder of literary agency Javelin. "But the real question is not progress, but whether this book can redefine her in 2028."

Urban said Harris had a chance to "get personal," admitting that she and Democrats misread voter sentiment and risk reaching a broader audience than her base.

"There's a version of the book that's full of clichés but safe, and there's a version that reinvents her to lead a Democratic Party that needs to be rebuilt," he said. "Either way, she will get a payday, but only the latter will give her a second chance at the presidency."

Many of Harris' advisers believe she has a complete story to tell and that voters will want to read it.

"I think she should write a book," a close friend of Harris said.

Ashley Etienne, who served as Harris' vice presidential communications director, said that if Harris did write a book, she planned to buy it for "all the women" in her life, including her daughter.

"The vice president is a historic figure with an incredible story. She has led efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, rebuild the economy and protect women's rights in this country," Etienne said. "People loved her - more than 700,000 people, in fact. I can imagine they're eager for her to pull back the curtain on her groundbreaking journey from a child of immigrants to running the most powerful nation in the world. "

Harris' last book, "The Truths We Hold," was published during her first presidential campaign and ranked No. 1 on the 2019 New York Times bestseller list. At the same time, she published a children's picture book called Superheroes Are Everywhere. ” In 2010, she wrote a memoir called “Criminal Smart.”
