A Massachusetts judge has agreed to refer to an unrelated, difficult murder investigation in Karen Read’s second trial and held a trial on the murder and other charges in the death of Boston police boyfriend John O'Keefe in 2022.
Canton police in a suburb about 20 miles south of Boston inaccurately determined the death of Sandra Birchmore, 24, of 24, who committed suicide until federal investigators said she was strangled and charged Stotton officer with murder.
The FBI arrested 38-year-old former Stotton police officer Matthew Farwell in August in the murder of Birchmore.

He has been accused of embellishing her since she was a teenager, maintaining sexual relations for years when she told him she was pregnant and staged a murder that looked like suicide, and then killed her.
During the snowstorm, O'Keeffe was also the first to respond after reports of O'Keeffe outside the Boston Police House outside the House of Representatives.
Local police collected bloody snow certificates in red personal cups and placed them in stops and shopping grocery bags. A state lieutenant used a leaf hair dryer to move snow from where O'Keeffe's body was found. Witnesses were interviewed informally, not under the camera, rather than at the police station.

O'Keeffe was found dead on Brian Albert's front lawn. Albert's brother is a state police detective.
Later that day, state police took over the investigation. But their participation is not without controversy. The main detective was fired earlier this year after an internal investigation of non-professional text messages revealed in court during Read’s first trial, which ended in a misleading lawsuit.

“Governor Healey should order police training in the state after Karen reads 1.0’s crash,” said Joseph Giacalone, retired New York Police Sergeant and criminal justice professor at Penn State Lehigh Valley. “Everything from patrol personnel to the response to the scene to ensuring the evidence, correct collection of evidence, proper containers of evidence, and more.”
Both cases prompted town residents to request an audit of their own police stations, and the town council hired a company called 5 Stones Intelligence or 5SI.

The company released its discovery in its April 1 206-page report that same day, the jury selection began with Read's retrial.
It found no evidence of Guangzhou police conspiracy to read, but the auditor recommended that the supervisor review all death cases in the future.
In the report, 5SI recommends Guangzhou detectives to conduct "advanced training" on crime scene investigations, and all patrol vehicles are equipped with crime scene kits and evidence collection bags. They called for an increase in the police department's budget.

There was also a federal investigation into the handling of O'Keefe's death. Reading is still the only person charged.
She faces charges of second-degree murder, drunk driving homicide and escape from a fatal accident after allegedly strikes with her Lexus SUV in a dispute and dies around 12:30 a.m.
She and two friends returned at 6 a.m. and found O'Keefe on the ground, covered in snow that had been exacerbated all day. An autopsy found that his death was caused by trauma from hypothermia on his head and body temperature. The method is uncertain.

Read completely denied O'Keefe, pleaded not guilty, and advised her to be framed by local police and their allies.
She was first charged last year, but the jurors were in a deadlock and Judge Beverly Cannone declared the crime.
So far, at least one evidence bag appears to have been mislabeled during the retrial, and the other has more taillights than expected. Massachusetts Police Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik was also baked for some evidence for lack of photos and delayed for hundreds of days to make some coverage in the investigation.
"If nothing else, they should be taught documentation, documentation and documentation," Giacalone told Fox News Digital. "These are not small mistakes. These mistakes can cause your case and will cause lawsuits in Massachusetts, which just makes everyone in the criminal justice system look bad."

"If Massachusetts has this problem, what about other states?" Jacaron said. “It’s time to get them stuck in the bud before we spot another Karen Reed trial disaster.”
Special Attorney Hank Brennan, a high-profile defense attorney whose clients include Mobster Whitey Bulger, was taken to the second trial.
When Reid's lawyers hope to portray the investigation as unreliable and corrupt, he asked the shells to stop the defense from bringing the Birchmore case last week. She agreed, unless the prosecutor "opens the door."
"They won't open that door," said Linda Kenney Baden, a highly-profile defense attorney.

She said that despite this, she believes jurors still have enough room to find reasonable doubts.
"They have to prove she hit him," she said. "It's really simple. It's a drunken crash."
Read's SUV has damaged its distance taillights, and police witnesses have described finding a matching piece on Albert's front lawn.
But the defensive car also played a surveillance video of O'Keeffe's garage, which seemed to show her SUV entering the parked vehicle shortly before the remains of her two other women, Kerry Roberts and Jennifer McCabe.
Nevertheless, the veteran trial attorney praised Brennan's handling of the case and how he ignored the main witnesses who might have gone on strike indictment in the first trial and provided less room for maneuver to the defense.

"The way Brennan tried this is that he didn't let anything bad in it, so whenever Alan Jackson went to something that really hurt them, he didn't go there."
On the one hand, he left the former Massachusetts TPR. Michael Proctor deleted the prosecutor's list of witnesses. Proctor sent a series of rude, lewd and unprofessional text messages about reading and investigating, which led to his firing.
He is still on the defense's witness list and can be summoned to the booth later.
