John Elway's long-term business partner dies after golf cart incident | Sports

NFL Hall of Fame member John Elway's business partner and former agent Jeff Sperbeck died Wednesday after being injured last weekend in the Southern California golf resort community. He is 62 years old.

There was no cause of death released, but the Riverside County Coroner's Office said Spelbeck was injured Saturday, and the address of the incident belonged to the Madison Club in La Quinta.

The Riverside County Fire Department said the agency was called to the site Saturday after someone fell from a golf cart. Department spokesman Maggie Cline de la Rosa said the person was not identified and was taken to a trauma center.

The Sheriff’s Department said it was investigating the golf cart incident.

Witness Ali Simon told Palm Springs' Kesq-TV that Elway was at the scene of the crash. Simon said she didn't see the accident happening, but saw a man lying on the ground surrounded by a phone.

"I was shocked and saddened by the death of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck," Elway said in a statement Wednesday. "There is no words that really express the deep sorrow of the sudden loss of me by someone who means a lot to me.

“My heart and deepest compassion are to Jeff’s wife Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson and everyone who knows and loves him.

Elway's statement did not address his presence on the scene.

Sperbeck began managing Elway in 1990, when Elway was the quarterback for the Denver Broncos. He has represented over 100 NFL players in his three decades of career as an agent and business consultant.

He is best known for Elway's longtime friends, business partners and brokers who helped manage the Hall of Fame's extensive off-site business empire, which includes restaurants, car dealers and wineries.

Sperbeck manages Elway's marketing and business ventures, and the two teamed up with winemaker Rob Mondavi Jr in 2015 to co-found seven with John Elway.

He also co-founded Sullivan & Sperbeck, a sports marketing company that was acquired by Octagon in 2001. Sperbeck opened Novo Agency from 2001-09 when he founded Novo Agency, a sports management company Novo Agency, where he served as CEO and represented dozens of current and retired NFL players and coaches. The agency merged with REP1 Sports in 2018.
