Jannik Sinner wins second consecutive Australian Open title

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner beat German Alexander Zverev in straight sets on Sunday, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 , won the Australian Open championship for the second consecutive time.

Zverev said it himself.

"You are by far the best player in the world. I wish I could have been a more competitive player today, but you were too good. It's that simple," he said.

This is Sinner's third Grand Slam title. He has won the Australian Open twice and the U.S. Open last year. He reached the semifinals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He is the eighth player in the Open era to start 3-0 in a Grand Slam final.

“It’s great to achieve these goals,” he said.

Sinner entered the tournament with a huge spotlight on him. He twice tested positive for trace amounts of anabolic steroids last March, but blamed it on accidental exposure by two members of his team. He was exonerated in a ruling appealed by WADA.

He was initially acquitted in August, but a WADA appeal is scheduled for April.

Tennis stars such as Nick Kyrgios have spoken out about doping violations by players such as Sinner and Iga Swiatek, who accepted a suspension in November.

"It's disgusting for our sport that two of the world's number one players have been sent off for doping. It's absolutely horrific," the Australian star said last month. "The integrity of tennis now, everyone knows it but no one wants to talk about it, which is too bad."
