Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert: Israeli action in Gaza "very close to war crimes"

The former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel was "operating in Gaza now and is very close to war crimes" in an interview with the BBC.

Olmert, who served as prime minister from 2006 to 2009, told the BBC that the Benjamin Netanyahu government was launching a "purposeless war - a war, no chance to achieve anything that could save the lives of a hostage".

He said the movement’s “obvious appearance” was that Israel killed many Palestinians, “from every perspective, it was annoying and outrageous.”

He said the Israeli government must say more clearly that it is "fighting against Hamas killers, we are not fighting innocent civilians".

Overnight, the chief of staff of the Israeli forces, Granule pronouna statement on Gaza's new military offensive was issued. Zamir described the months-long bombing of Gaza, which Zamir paid more than 50,000 lives according to Palestinian Medical Services, saying: "We are defending ourselves."

He said in a passage directed at the Palestinian people:

I want to speak to the residents of Gaza: We are not the one who brings this destruction to you. We are not the ones who started this war. We are not those who deprive you of food, shelter, and money. We don't hide in hospitals or schools. We do not stay in luxury hotels when you have difficulties. This is your leader - the one who takes control of our hostages. Hamas is responsible for launching the war. It is caused to the difficult situation of civilians - it brings damage, which will not be the one to rebuild.

Zamir also claimed that accusing Israeli forces of acting in other ways was “unfounded”. Israel’s humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip so far has created an almost complete blockade of humanitarian aid, resulting in a warning of hunger. Zamir said:

The IDF always operates in accordance with the IDF’s values, Israeli law and international law, while maintaining an uncompromising commitment to the security of Israel and its civilians. Any statement of any doubt about the integrity of our actions or the morality of soldiers is unfounded.

Zamir also tried to assure the families of the remaining hostages in Gaza that Hamas has been captured since October 7, 2023, many of whom have been believed to have been killed. Zamir said:

I am fully aware of the concerns and pains of the hostage family and the issues raised by the combination of these goals. It's a complex challenge, but we have the tools, wisdom and responsibility to satisfy it. I, along with every soldier in the IDF, will continue to act relentlessly until all of our hostages are taken home.

Welcome and summary

Hello, welcome to Guardians’ ongoing coverage of the Middle East crisis.

Israel rejected EU and UK criticism of the intensified campaign in Gaza, with rescuers saying Tuesday’s new attacks, including strikes on family homes and a transgender person killed dozens of people, including many children.

Israel said 93 aid trucks (only a small fraction of what is needed) entered Gaza from Israel on Tuesday, but the UN said such aid did not actually reach Palestinians. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said that despite the aid entering Gaza, aid workers were unable to bring it to the distribution point where they needed the most, during the time when Israeli military forced them to reload supplies into separate trucks and workers.

The United Nations announced on Monday that aid has been cleared since Israel imposed a lockdown on March 2, triggering severe food and medical shortages. Unsupported experts said Gaza faced "a key risk to famine" last week.

The humanitarian crisis caused by Israel has caused international outrage, with the EU saying it would review trade deals with Israel under the lockdown, while the UK suspended free trade negotiations with Israel, summoned the Israeli ambassador and said it imposed a tough action against Israel on the toughest actions of Israel, a tough act against Israel.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Oren Marmorstein said the EU's actions "reflect the complete misunderstanding of the complex reality facing Israel." Mamostan said in response to the UK: "External pressure will not allow Israel to defend its path to existence and security."
