Israeli officials approved a plan to occupy Gaza indefinitely within hours on Monday, hours after the military announced the convening of thousands of reserve forces.
Israeli cabinet minister approved the plan in a early morning vote on Monday. Israel currently controls about 50% of Gaza, and the plan will expand Israeli forces to the south. Officials say the plan will be implemented gradually and Israeli forces will control Hamas' territory.
The plan will also seek to prevent the radical Hamas group from distributing humanitarian aid, which Israel said strengthens the group's rule in Gaza. It also accuses Hamas of providing assistance to itself to enhance its capabilities. Officials said the plan also includes a powerful strike against Hamas targets.
Violence in Gaza has once again intensified in the weeks since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in March. The IDF also vowed to increase operations against Yemeni Husi after terrorist groups fired a missile that landed near Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
