Israel, Hamas agree on ceasefire framework

Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement that will end the 15-month war that has ravaged Gaza, according to multiple media reports. The deal would free dozens of hostages kidnapped by Hamas and Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an unprecedented terrorist attack, killing 1,195 Israelis and taking hundreds more hostage. Israel has since launched a brutal retaliatory siege of Gaza and a near-total blockade. More than 46,000 Palestinians were killed in the offensive, with some estimates putting the total death toll at more than 64,000. The brutality of the war has led to accusations of deliberate famine, war crimes and genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) indicted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yove Galant, and Hamas leader Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri. A warrant was issued.

Details of the deal have not been officially announced and must still be approved by Israeli officials. Netahayo's office said on Wednesday that the agreement had not yet been finalized.

While President Joe Biden and his administration regularly criticize Israel's handling of the war and blockade, they have supported Israel with aid and firepower, even as Netanyahu has resisted their calls for a temporary or other ceasefire. Biden responded to news of the ceasefire in a statement. "Today, after months of U.S. diplomacy, Israel and Hamas, along with Egypt and Qatar, reached a ceasefire and hostage agreement," the outgoing president wrote. "We are determined to bring all (hostages) with them," he wrote. Go back to Syria." Gaza) to go home under the agreement. "

Meanwhile, incoming President-elect Donald Trump has won praise for the deal, declaring on Truth Social: "This epic ceasefire will only make history when we make history in November." This can only be achieved with a sexual victory because it sends a signal to the world that my administration will pursue peace and negotiate agreements that ensure the safety of all Americans and our allies. I am pleased that the American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to their families and friends. Family reunion."

Trump may have a point: He has publicly demanded an end to the war by January 20, when he will be sworn in as president again. His Middle East envoy, businessman Steve Witkopf, reportedly asked Netanyahu to meet during the Sabbath on Saturday and quickly reach a deal.

Now, Israel has agreed to a deal that is reportedly largely similar to the framework proposed by the Biden administration months ago, in May 2024.

While Trump may take credit for ending the brutal war, there may be more difficulties: Israeli leaders and supporters hope Trump will support Israel's annexation of more Palestinian territory in the occupied West Bank desire.
