Adena Friedman, CEO and Chairman of NASDAQ, appeared on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on April 24 to discuss how to make market volatility and what the IPO landscape can cause. Friedman reported that Nasdaq's total revenue grew 12.5% in the quarter, with double-digit announcements in each division increasing. Specifically, the index business grew 26%, backed by $27 billion inflows this quarter. Half of these inflows are directed to the Nasdaq 100 index product, while the other half involves various other indices offered by the Nasdaq. Friedman also admitted that the economy entered the year with resilience, but as the quarter progressed, the uncertainty and volatility in the economy grew. However, she explained that this environment often drives customers to turn to Nasdaq, becoming the preferred market operator to manage their transaction volume and capital flows. Even in the case of market value fluctuations, Nasdaq people have seen inflows of their index products and a strong demand for fintech services.
The discussion also shows that while short-term market volatility can improve trading activity and liquidity, the long-term IPO prospects depend on the broader economic situation. Friedman said IPO activity and investor behavior could be even greater if the economy enters a prolonged recession. But for now, Nasdaq has benefited from a strong start to the year and remains the go-to place for investors to express their opinions. The conversation then turned to global capital flows, especially as Chinese sovereign wealth funds could reduce U.S. venture capital and private equity firms’ investments. Friedman said capital flows are the strongest. She stressed that the asset owner and manager have a “trust” responsibility for their ultimate beneficiary and will prioritize returns in the long run. Friedman acknowledged the impact of geopolitical and political factors on investment decisions, stressing that the role of Nasdaq is to provide infrastructure that enables capital to flow efficiently, regardless of the transformation.
