On May 8, Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities joined CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" to discuss his bullish views on the AI industry and technology. Ives used the technique of rising along the highway at 100 mph in Ferrari, while the adjustment lag in slow lanes at 35 mph. He stressed that given this difference, most of the supervision will be self-regulated as AI use cases are expanding rapidly. He predicted continued mergers in the field, noting that regulatory efforts will not prevent this trend. The discussion also involves international trade, especially the discussions about the United Kingdom, China, India and Vietnam. Ives describes any progress in the UK as a small but positive step, but stresses that the real focus of tech companies remains China. He explained that although the UK relations are noteworthy, its impact does not have the same impact as China and that tech companies are closely monitoring developments in Asia because they are important to larger deals. He also predicts that major tech athletes will acquire smaller or emerging private companies and believes that the ongoing AI revolution will be unstoppable even in the face of tariffs, which will prompt companies to position themselves well and play a key role in the future.
Ives acknowledged current regulatory uncertainty and unexpected shifts from key technology partners, but has a bullish stance on Big Tech due to accelerated use cases and spending in the industry. Ives also discussed the adoption of agency AI or AI agents by businesses and when their impact on business efficiency and profit margins becomes apparent. Ives stressed that the AI revolution is spreading across software, cybersecurity and the Internet, and tariffs will not hinder this fourth industrial revolution. In fact, Ives believes that tariffs may even accelerate AI adoption by increasing price pressures and driving companies to seek efficiency, underscoring this revenue season is crucial and spending on AI has accelerated. He observed that AI-related budgets soared from 1% a year ago to 2% now and are about 15%, and believes neither regulatory hearings nor tariffs can slow the momentum. He likens the current AI revolution to the decisive last game in basketball as it brings unexpected results of change to the tech sector.
