Iran executes people accused of helping Israel kill colonel | Iran

Iran has executed a 36-year-old man accused of helping Israel's foreign intelligence agency Mossad kill a senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) official in Tehran in 2022.

Iranian state media said Mohsen Langarneshin was hanged, the Iranian execution method, in the early morning of Wednesday at Ghezel Hesar prison.

Langarneshin's family and human rights groups insist that the former IT adviser was innocent in allegations against him, and that any reported confessions were obtained through torture or blackmail.

Langanesh's mother brought emotional appeal to her life on Tuesday. "Please pray for my kids...I don't know if he will see the sunrise tomorrow," she said in an article on social media.

"I don't know why the court refused to accept any documents and evidence we brought. We have a lot of evidence to prove his innocent evidence, but it was not accepted."

Langarneshin was a "superior spy" of Mossad, who provided key "technical support" for the assassination of Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, the Colonel of the Revolutionary Guard, who was shot five times, was shot on a motorcycle outside his home by the gunman, and other alleged actions.

The IRNA report said that Mossad recruited Langanesh in 2020 and he met with Israeli intelligence officials in Georgia and Nepal. He was arrested in July 2023.

Activists fear that the Iranian scapegoat innocent people failed to catch the actual agents who often identified the escape from overseas.

"Mohsen Langarneshin was sentenced to judicial proceedings for confessions obtained in torture and was sentenced to death for accused of Israeli espionage," said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) Monitor.

"The Iranian authorities' execution machines are accelerating every day, taking more lives," he said.

At least 335 people have been hanged in Iran so far this year alone, campaigners said. Iran has been executed in 2025 for more than 900 people. A man was executed in December 2023 after being found guilty of working with Mossad. Four other people were hanged a year ago because of their ties to Israel.

The U.S.-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Center, who had run in its case, said Langarneshin was convicted in a revolutionary court chaired by judge Abolghasem Salavati, approved by the U.S. and the EU, and was notorious for his death sentence.

"He denied all the charges and pointed out that his confession was extracted in torture," the group said.

The Revolutionary Court was established after the Revolution in 1979 and often provided summary justices at closed hearings.

Israel and Iran have been assassinating and exploding shadow wars for decades. A series of attacks that caused Mossad to target Iranian scientists, experts and scholars, and many of them were related to Iran's nuclear program. Last year, Israel was believed to have killed Ismail Haniyeh, the highest political leader in Hamas.

In Israel, a 72-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday, accused of discussing a plot with Iranian intelligence agencies to assassinate senior government officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel and its allies have long refused to rule out a military strike against Iran as U.S. President Donald Trump tries to reach a new deal with Iranian leaders over his nuclear program.

Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday that Iran expects the next round of negotiations with the United States to be held in Rome on Saturday, adding that Iran also expects to meet with France, Germany and the United Kingdom on Friday to discuss negotiations.
