Writer and advocate Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi won this year's International Booker Award for his book Heart lamp. The book is the first collection of short stories to win the award, which awards best novels translated into English.

The book collects 12 short stories written by Mushtaq between 1990 and 2023. They tell the story of girls and women navigating castes and classes in Muslim communities in southern India. In one story, a woman is jealous of the relationship between her husband and mother. In another woman, one woman deals with her son’s painful circumcision.

Mushtaq, a lawyer and advocate for women's rights, wrote in a statement that the stories were inspired by daily events happening to women around them. "I witnessed this in my daily life (daily) because so many women come to me. They bring all the problems. They seek relief. But there are women who don't know why they suffer."

Heart lamp Is the first prize winner using Kannada translation from southern India. In an interview with scroll.in, translator Deepa Bhasthi explained that her translation method is not to turn the language into "proper" English. Instead, “the goal is to introduce the reader to new words, in this case, Kannada or new ideas with another language buzz. I call it an accent translation,” she said. “So English is Heart lamp Is a British man with a very intentional Kannada buzz. ”

The judges of this year's awards must compare the list with the 154 books submitted by the publisher. The award comes with £50,000 (approximately $66,000), which is evenly distributed between the author and the translator.

Other books shortlisted for the award include In the calculation of the first volume, the boat, in front of the big bird, is perfect and Leopard print hat.
