Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally delivered a speech to the country on May 12, two days after announcing a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He said the Indian Army only "suspends" military operations and Operation Sindor, which was launched after the Pahargam massacre on April 22 to target "terrorist hiding places" but did not end.
"Road Sindor is now India's policy to terrorism. Operation Sindor has achieved new benchmarks in our fight against terrorism and has established new parameters and new routines," he said.
Modi's speech was obviously not intended to allow the Indian people to ensure that the government can guarantee its security or security and seek peace and stability. Instead, it aims to warn the country now in a permanent state of war.
This new situation is not to ensure national interests, but to meet Modi's nationalist support base, which is confusing and disappointed by US President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire. According to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the harmful effects of this new militarization on Indian democracy are clearly worth the effort.
The truth is that when political institutions decide to capitalize politically after the Pahargam attacks in India-managed Kashmir attacks, they unconsciously put themselves in a difficult position.
Although the victims of the attack survived and lost their husbands like Himanshi Narwal, Navy officer Vinay Narwal called for peace and warned against targeting Muslims and Kashmiris, the BJP called for revenge and acceptance of anti-Muslim repentance.
As a ruling party, it does not need to assume responsibility for failing to prevent attacks or explaining carelessness in ensuring a tourist destination. It immediately transformed this act of killing into an act of war against India.
Action quickly follows hateful remarks. Muslims and Kashmiris were attacked in several parts of India and arrested by people criticizing the Indian government. In Kashmir, nine houses were immediately bombed, and thousands of houses were detained or arrested due to punishment for people with any connection to the "terrorists". People with Pakistani passports were deported and their families were destroyed.
Then, Sindoor Operation was announced. Indian troops aimed at the Pakistani ruins, accompanied by crazy calls from mainstream media, demanded a complete erasure of Pakistan. The main TV platform - totally wrong - declared that the Karachi port had been destroyed and Indian troops violated the border.
War crying and fake news emerged from TV studios, while crazy news from BJP's IT cell led supporters to believe that a decisive battle with Pakistan had been launched, about to fall.
Meanwhile, the critical sound quickly fell silent. The Indian government has requested 8,000 accounts from social media platform X, including those of BBC Urdu, Outlook India, Maktoob Media, senior journalist Anuradha Bhasin and political content creator Arpit Sharma.
Just as the war fever grabbed the BJP's support base, they were surprised by the sudden announcement of a ceasefire in the United States. A truce is seen as retreat and acceptance of weakness.
Some online supporters of the BJP will announce a ceasefire as representative of the Indian government, Foreign Minister Vikram Misri. He was attacked with viciousness, and his timeline was filled with messages of abuse and violence, calling him a traitor and coward. His daughter is also facing abuse.
Trolling is so serious that Misri has to lock his social media account. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, we have not heard of any social media accounts that delayed any blockade of his or police actions on them. She also did not take any action to protect Naval after facing abuse and humiliation from the same group of people who dared to call for peace.
Meanwhile, the Civil Rights Association, which focuses on rights violations in marginalized communities, has released a report saying 184 hate crimes targeting Muslims, including murder, attacks, vandalism, hate speech, threats, intimidation and harassment - reports from different regions since April 22.
On Saturday, Misri claimed India was a democracy that allowed criticism of the government. However, critics’ experience raises questions about the objective and efficacy of Sindor’s actions.
Criticism of the government needs to be considered by parliament. But the government has been ignoring the opposition’s call to convene parliament, which means stagnation of democratic dialogue.
Now the Prime Minister declares that the action is not over and will demand the full loyalty of the Indian people. The opposition will be forced to suspend all issues to the government. Muslims will feel burdened to prove their loyalty to the country. The government will be happy to blame the serious economic situation it has done in the war. There will be freedom of speech, but only for those who support the BJP.
Therefore, India's democracy is still in a pause animation, as the country now faces a permanent enemy and a permanent war.
