Imran Khan sentenced to 14 years in prison in corruption case

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in a corruption case, the latest in a series of charges against him.

Pakistani authorities have called the case the country's largest ever, despite the country's past huge financial scandals, some involving former leaders.

It's the latest setback for the cricket star-turned-politician, who has been Detained from August 2023.

He faces charges in more than 100 cases, ranging from leaking state secrets to selling state gifts, all of which he denounces as politically motivated.

In the latest case, Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are accused of receiving a piece of land as a bribe from a real estate tycoon through the Qadir Trust, which the couple set up during Khan's tenure.

In exchange, investigators said, Khan used 190 million pounds ($232 million) remitted by Britain's National Crime Agency to pay the tycoon's court fines.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party argued that the land was donated to a trust for a spiritual education center and not for Khan's personal benefit.

Posting on X, PTI chief Gohar Ali Khan said the former prime minister "did not do anything wrong" and it was a "politically motivated unfair trial".

"But (Imran Khan) will not give in, he will not give up, he will not collapse," he wrote.

Friday's verdict came after repeated delays as Khan's party held talks with the government.

After Friday's conviction, Khan told reporters in court that he would "neither enter into any agreement nor seek any relief."

Khan's 14-year prison sentence is the maximum sentence that can be imposed in the case. He was also fined more than £4,000.

His wife was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined more than £2,000. Bibi has been on bail since October last year and was detained by the court after the sentencing.

In 2023, Khan was sentenced to three years in prison for failing to declare income from the sale of gifts he received while in office.

Last year, Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison for selling state gifts. In another 10 years for leaking state secrets. Both sentences were suspended months later.

Despite being behind bars and barred from holding public office, Khan Occupies an important position in Pakistan's political arena. Candidates supported by Imran Khan in last year’s election win the most seats from all parties.
