Last November, I was honored to see voters in the great state of Nevada re-elect me to the United States Senate. In the same election, Nevadans also voted to elect Donald Trump as president of the United States, the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since 2004. One of the defining issues in both of our campaigns was the high cost of living, which squeezes people's living costs. hard-working Nevada families and causing financial hardship. Households are frustrated by the price increases they are seeing, and they have every right to be. During the election, voters made their dissatisfaction with the economy clear at the ballot box.

Americans work hard every day, but many are still struggling to get by as prices on everything from grocery stores to gas stations have skyrocketed over the past few years. This is forcing families across the country to make difficult choices: feed their families, keep a roof over their heads, or fill up their gas tanks. That’s why I have been urging Washington to take action to lower costs and ease the financial burden on families, giving them much-needed breathing space.

Since entering Congress, I have made it clear that I will work with anyone, regardless of party or ideology, to help families in my state. I focus on results and don't play politics. That's why I've been voted one of the most bipartisan and independent senators in the United States many times. We certainly won't agree on every issue, but if Trump is serious about providing economic relief to hardworking families by lowering costs, then I'm willing to try to work with him on that. We can start from the following aspects.

Duffy confirmation hearing marked by bipartisanship, pledge to visit Helen-affected states

One of the most high-profile promises of Trump's campaign, announced in Nevada, was to eliminate taxes on tips for service workers. I grew up in a working class family and worked as a waitress while in school, so I know what it's like to work multiple jobs and rely on tips to make ends meet. I never forget where I come from, and I'm not afraid to take a good idea even if it comes from the other side of the aisle.

That’s why I quickly supported this proposal in the last Congress and will support legislation to implement it again this year. By eliminating the tip income tax and putting guardrails in place to prevent the super-rich like CEOs from exploiting loopholes, we can ensure Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.

Another idea floated during the campaign was to cut taxes for hard-working families by expanding and increasing the child tax credit. In fact, Vice President-elect JD Vance has called for raising it to $5,000. This tax credit has been a major lifeline for working families in Nevada and across the country who are doing their best to make ends meet.

This extra money means a lot to families who can now afford quality child care, buy necessities like diapers and baby wipes, or pay for doctor’s visits. By strengthening the child tax credit to lower families' tax burden, we are investing in American families and strengthening our country.

We can also work together to make it easier for families across the country to rent or own a home. Trump and I have both called on the Fed to lower interest rates, which would help lower home prices. We also need to strengthen America’s construction workforce and increase housing supply, which will lower costs and help more families find an affordable place to live. We can take steps to make more federally owned land available for responsible development of affordable housing.

As Congress and the incoming administration continue to negotiate an upcoming comprehensive tax package, we must focus on ensuring that it provides meaningful tax relief to middle-class Americans. Individuals, families and small businesses deserve breathing space and peace of mind. We can do this by ensuring that the program primarily benefits them, rather than the super-rich and big corporations.

What we need is common-sense, forward-thinking economic policy that puts the American people first. That’s why I’m deeply concerned about Trump’s plan to impose sweeping tariffs. This will result in Americans paying higher prices at the checkout counter and will wreak havoc on the budgets of working families. This doesn't help working people, and I hope he quickly recognizes the harm that widespread tariffs will do to consumers.

Hard-working Americans face real financial challenges that impact their lives every day. We can work together to lower costs and help families succeed. I'm willing to work with anyone on either side to make this happen. By working together, Democrats and Republicans, President-elect Trump, and Congress, we can help make the American Dream a reality—one that is affordable for all Americans.
