It was a chaotic scene on Wednesday at South Chicago Road as U.S. immigration and customs law enforcement officers and other officers detained several people.
Community activists and city leaders clashed with federal immigration agents on site.
The agent started at noon for a few hours at BI Incorporated Building at 2245 Michigan.
Immigrants are called to the facility regularly to ensure they comply with the conditions for their release from custody and to ensure they appear in court if needed.
CBS News Chicago spoke with many people affected by detention and obtained screenshots of messages sent to immigrants, asking them to come to the office for regular appointments to their immigration status.
Instead, they were detained on ice.
"People under the program have received similar text messages, whether yesterday or Monday, told to come in for unexpected or unplanned check-in," said Antonio Gutierrez, strategic coordinator and co-founder of the Organizational Community.
The severely masked federal immigration law enforcement officers appeared without announcement. CBS News Chicago's cameras were there, and agents detained several people.
Some ice agents carry non-lethal ammunitions that are often used to disperse people.
Witnesses said at least 10 people were loaded into the truck. It is not clear why they were detained.
A handful of Chicago alumni joined dozens of community activists and immigration rights activists who were angry at what they saw throughout the afternoon.
"We don't know who is arresting our siblings because they are hiding behind masks," Alder said. Michael Rodriguez (22nd).
"When they go in, they will automatically arrest them," a man said at the scene.
The man said he gave up his friends of Guatemala asylum seekers in his office Thursday morning and they were detained.
He said they all received messages from the ICE instructing them to review the case.
"We don't know where they are," the man said. "We don't know what happened to them."
Community members effectively showed up Wednesday afternoon, yelling at icefield agents and trying to see why people were detained.
"What we're seeing today is the Gesta-style kidnapping that happened before all of us," Alder said, Byron Sigcho-Lopez (No. 25).
"People aren't going to be trapped," Ald added, Julia Ramirez (12th). “They need to live a dignified life.”
Attorney Cynthia Fernandez said her client was a Guatemalan immigrant and was detained by Ice.
“We don’t understand why,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez said her client was also notified.
"She followed everything. She did everything. She had an active pending work permit and was told to come in. She came in with the attorney - but was still arrested." "I was her attorney. I should be able to do something, but I can't. I don't know where she is."
Tensions between community activists and icefield agents have played a role in other cities like Minneapolis in recent days.
Chicago police confirmed that police were helping crowd control the scene. Police said this was for the benefit of public safety and CPD officials did not assist ICE.
The ICE did not immediately respond to requests for information on detention and arrest.
