Jared Kaplan, co-founder and chief science officer of humans, said his company cuts Anthropic's Claude AI model from windsurfing, largely because of rumors and reports that its biggest competitor is getting AI coding assistants.

“We are really just trying to make our customers able to work with us sustainably,” Kaplan said in an interview on stage at TC Crunch on Thursday at TC Sessions: AI 2025.

"I think it's strange for us to sell Cloud to Openai," Kaplan said.

The comments reported on Bloomberg that Openai acquired Windsurf for $3 billion a few weeks after it. Earlier this week, Windsurf said that anthropomorphism would directly access Claude 3.5 sonnets and Claude 3.7 sonnets, two more popular coding AI models, forcing the startup to find third-party computing providers in relatively short notices. Windsurf said this was disappointed with Anthropic's decision and could lead to short-term instability for users who are trying to access Claude through Windsurf.

Windsurf declined to comment on Kaplan's remarks, and an OpenAI spokesperson did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's request. The two companies have not confirmed the acquisition rumors.

According to Kaplan, the anthropomorphic twists came into Claude partly because the company is very calculated today. Anthropic wants to retain its calculations for Kaplan's "endurable partnership."

But, Kaplan said the company hopes to significantly improve the usability of models that can be provided to users and developers in the coming months. He added that anthropomorphism has just begun unlocking capabilities from its new compute cluster from its partner Amazon, which he said is “really big and continues to scale.”

With crowd-driven wind surfing, Kaplan says he is working with other clients who build AI coding tools, such as Cursor-Kaplan says humans expect to work with it for a long time. Kaplan rejects the idea of ​​anthropomorphism competing with companies like Cursor, which is developing its own AI model.

Meanwhile, Kaplan says anthropomorphism is increasingly focused on developing its own proxy coding products, such as Claude code, rather than the AI ​​chatbot experience. While companies like OpenAI, Google and Meta are competing for the most popular AI chatbot platform, Kaplan says the chatbot paradigm is limiting due to its static nature, and AI agents will help users more in the long run.
