Two years ago, then South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol serenades at the White House to perform an American sect. Washington and Seoul are one of the most important allies in the Asia-Pacific region, as firm as Yoon Won's co-dance.
As he prepares to replace the now-leading Yoon, South Korea's new leader Lee Jae-Myung will have to send a very different tone with Biden's successor in the White House.
His inauguration was complete, and Lee initially focused on healing his predecessor’s open wounds to Korean society and began to grow in Asia’s fourth largest economy.
Inevitably, though, he will soon have to find a way to interact with Donald Trump’s White House, whose initial reaction to Lee’s huge victory against conservative opponents was to suggest that his bumpy road smoothed out his bumpy road.
Not surprisingly, Lee gave a big part of his first speech as President of the Trump trade war, calling an increasing amount of trade protectionism a "threat to our existence."
However, there is no immediate plan to negotiate a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum imports on Wednesday. South Korea was the fourth largest steel exporter in the United States last year, accounting for 13% of its total imports.
"President Lee will have little time to waste time before he handles the most important tasks of his early presidency: reaching a deal with Trump," the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies said in his analysis.
There is no detail about how Lee intends to repair economic ties with China, South Korea's largest trading partner so far, without alienating Trump.
Kim Jun-Seok, a political science professor at Seoul East District University, said that public confidence in the queen's democracy has been restored and other huge challenges are awaiting Lee. "The serious outlook for the economy is expected to grow by less than 1%. There is a crisis outside, dealing with Trump. He has a lot of work to do."
Traditionally, the biggest foreign policy challenge facing the upcoming South Korean president is nuclear weapons. Lee vowed to restart conversations with the North on Wednesday after a rapidly deteriorating ties under Yoon.
"No matter how expensive, peace is better than war," he said, promising to "stop North Korea's nuclear and military provocations when opening channels of communication."
Although Trump recently repeated a request during his first presidency that Seoul paid more for the cost of hosting 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea, security relations between the two sides seem solid - for the moment.
"The United States and South Korea have a tec commitment to a coalition based on our mutual defense, shared values and deep economic ties," U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after Lee's victory.
It remains to be seen how much space Lee has to connect with China and the United States. So far, he has raised the focus of praising the US-South Korea relations and said he intends to establish a trilateral partnership with Washington and Tokyo.
After a brief inauguration of the National Assembly, Lee was on the customary phone call of the head of his Joint Chiefs of Staff and then paid tribute to the Korean War death at the National Cemetery in Seoul. He is expected to answer calls from world leaders later that day, and Trump will first express his congratulations.
"Sometimes political leadership is crucial," said Kim Dae-Jong, a professor at Sejong University in Sejong University. "Along with the president-elect, a phone call with Trump can greatly improve the situation."
Lee's supporters described him as a pragmatic and effective negotiator, but if he could lead himself to the leadership of his ex, he might have been worse than Don McLean in the early 1970s when he was given another Don McLean: If we try.
