The Netflix series "Forever" successfully conveys the powerful emotions of first love. Music director Kier Lehman said that coupled with the contrast between Justin and Keisha’s lifestyle and family dynamics makes the audience “see themselves,” he said, overwhelmingly positive reaction to Season 1.
He told him: “Young people can see themselves and be associated with their experiences of Justin and Keisha. type. "These lifestyles are found in two different types of families, providing experiences that people can connect with or desire to relate to. Feeling this connection draws them further into the story."
Lehman's contribution to planning this season's soundtrack is also arguably the same gravity. His musical selection highlights include a heart-warming party between Justin and Keisha at Martha's Vineyard featuring Daniel Caesar's "Blessings," which he recalls, "in the role after a break, they climax as characters or get a little bit of an emotional climax as they may get for a while." Even more exciting: Frank Ocean's "Moon River" is played in the final episode as the duo takes a separate approach after their breakup.
The show, held in Los Angeles in 2018, is based on Judy Blume’s classic books and gives Lehman the opportunity to bring audiences back to the era of hip-hop and R&B, with artists from Los Angeles dominating the rankings with SZA, Tyler, Tyler, The Creator, Nipsey Hussle, Nipsey Hussle, Victoria Monét and others.
“These artists have come a long way from the young independent artists in the city,” Lehman said. “They match the tone of the city, creating a voice that influences people who grew up in Los Angeles and blend them together in fresh ways.”
Taking on a “forever” job is an opportunity to “scalate and expand in a different direction” while revisiting his former “unsafe” playlists and rediscovering pop artists and songs from that time on.
"It's a different show," he explained. "There are different characters and different sounds, so I have to expand and go in a different direction. The sound of the show ("unsafe") is great because of things I didn't do, the artists I wanted to work with and use their music at that time."
Lehman noted that curating the famous “Forever” soundtrack was a collaborative effort with creator and producer Mara Brock Akil, whose main goal was to evoke nostalgia and highlighted the biggest musical influence in Los Angeles during that period. “We made sure we celebrated artists in Los Angeles who reflect areas from South Los Angeles to the (Hollywood) hills that will be linked to the characters of Justin and Kisha.”
Lehman said the soundtracks of Justin and Kisha were naturally influenced by their parents. Justin’s parents listened to jazz and the voices of the early 90s R&B, while Keisha’s mom preferred the current and female empowerment genre. “Even in the backstage, the musical influence passed to the parents of the child must be shown.”
Throughout the season, nostalgic songs continued to play with songs by Masego, Migos, Trippie Redd, Travis Scott and Jhene Aiko, and had a lively, well-choreographed dance for Saweetie’s “My Type” at the high-end dance party of Justin and Keisha.
"I grew up in Los Angeles, so I had an extra special connection with the music and city in Los Angeles," Lehman said. "I grew up being a big music fan and explored the music scene and venues of the city. It was a special opportunity for me to continue to emphasize the amazing artists who have grown in Los Angeles and give the city its unique voice, especially through hip hop and R&B."
