Birmingham Rep announced the upcoming world premiere “Sherlock Holmes and Twelve Days of Christmas” ahead of Sherlock Holmes Day on May 22, with co-written people Humphrey Ker and David Reed stepping into the iconic roles of Sherlock Holmes and Watson.
The new comedy, Whodunnit, will bow in Birmingham on November 14 and will last until January 11, 2026, with original songs featuring legendary musical theatre duo Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Phillip Breen will be produced with Becky Hope-Palmer. The plot involves a series of mysterious deaths by performers in the West Side, and Sherlock Holmes discovers an interesting connection to "Twelve Days of Christmas."
Ker recently worked as executive producer on FX/Disney+'s "Welcome to Wrexham," where he also served as the Football Club's community director, where he will serve as a prominent detective. His latest honors include NBC’s “American Auto” and Apple TV+’s “Fantastic Mission.”
Reed's television credits include "Effort", "Beyond Heaven", "Father Brown" and "Ghosts", which will play Dr. Watson. His writing credits cover radio comedy and the audible original series "Zero". Margaret Cabourn-Smith and John Kearns will take Mrs. Hudson and Lestrade as examples, respectively.
"Dave and I were so happy to trick Birmingham Rep into writing and starring in a very stupid Holmes adventure," Kerr said. "It was a dream thing to do with such beloved friends and collaborators from Margaret, John, Tim, Andrew and director superstar Phil Breen. Can't wait to put on the Daysterks, sprinkle morphine-filled needles on the needle and be Sherlock Holmes."
"Humphry and I have been fascinated by the roles of Holmes and Watson since we met on stage in Edinburgh 20 years ago," Reed added. "We introduced them in the first broadcast series 'The Brothers Faversham' and turned their turn on the BBC's two improvised sketch shows, "Fast & Lose." Now, playing them seriously is a dream come true."
The holiday-themed mystery marks another important collaboration between Rice and Lloyd Webber, adding to their legendary partnership that creates dramatic classics such as “The Superstar of Jesus Christ,” “evita” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.
