David Olusoga, a historian and broadcaster at the University of Manchester, has set up a production company called Hillgate Films.
The company said Thursday it will "focus on developing and producing innovative and thought-provoking historical documentaries, formats and series, including Olusoga as talent on screen."
The company's establishment is provided in the form of a development agreement supported by BBC Studios, which said it "will enhance growth ambitions in exchange for first-time distribution rights."
The company stressed that Hillgate Films would serve as co-producer rather than independent producers “allowing Olusoga to focus on fewer, more ambitious projects.” “By serving as co-producer, Hillgate can work with a range of established partners on large projects while making Olusoga a creative freedom focused on the content itself rather than the day-to-day management of the production company.”
Hillgate said it had the first two projects in production, but did not reveal more details. Olusoga's work includes the BBC's A stroll house And the recent landmark BBC series alliance.
"We want to explore countless stories in history and we are excited to work with the forward-looking and dynamic team at BBC Studios. I am passionate about creating new jobs that create new ideas and make new perspectives come true, and I believe we have an incredible opportunity to do this with Hillgate Films."
He added: “By reaching a development agreement with BBC Studios, we are ready to grow and expand the company and develop ambitious plans for the future.”
Olusoga is joined by Managing Director Ben Hall, who previously served as Global Program Director for Motion Content Group. “David’s journey as a storyteller and historian speaks for himself and I’m happy to work with him to bring important and engaging stories to the audience,” he said Thursday.
"David has a solid record of bold and nuanced stories in history that resonate globally and can drive dialogue and change perspectives. We are excited to continue our long-term working relationships."
