Guy Ritchie will direct the sequel to "House of the Road" and Jake Gyllenhaal will reprise him as the lead role of former fighter Dalton.
"Road House 2" marks the third collaboration between Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, and their second collaboration for Amazon MGM Studios after Guy Ritchie's Covenant). The filmmakers, along with Oscar and Tony nominated actors, are also working with the upcoming action thriller "Gray."
Will Beall ("Bad Boy: Ride or Death", "Beverly Hills Police Department: Axel F") is writing a script for the sequel, with plot details saved in the package. Producers include Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment, as well as nine story works by Gyllenhaal and Josh McLaughlin. Ivan Atkinson will execute the product.
"House of the Road" starring Patrick Swayze in 1989, then Gyllenhaal is a former UFC fighter struggling to make ends meet. After the owner of the Florida Key House found him sleeping in a car, Dalton became a bouncer at the bar, finding himself trapped in a war between lawbreakers and bikers (including real-life hybrid martial artist and first-time actor Conor McGregor) and determined to build a luxury resort for "rich assholes."
The film is considered a success for Amazon MGM, and the studio announced that it is developing a sequel in its first preliminary speech developed last summer. The film, released on Prime Video last March and broke the record of the ribbon, attracted nearly 80 million global audiences in its first eight weeks, becoming the studio's "most-watched film debut globally," which was then-chief Jennifer Salke.
Ritchie's prolific filmography includes 2019's "Aladdin" (a live-action adaptation of Disney), which had a global box office of over $1 billion, which was his top spot - the British gangster comedy The Gentlemen - successfully derived the second season spin-off on Netflix. Ritchie has just launched the new Paramount + Drama series "Mobland," which follows an organized crime family starring Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. His next film, Youth Source, is with John Krasinski, Natalie Portman and Eiza González, debuting on Apple TV+ on May 23. Upcoming movies include Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Parker and Anthony Hopkins' black comedy "Wife and the Dog."
Ritchie stepped in to director Doug Liman, who was frustrated with the streaming release of the original "Road House" movie. Last year, Liman told Indiewire that his dissatisfaction stems from not being properly compensated, as "Road House" was originally considered a MGM drama release, but when Amazon got MGM, distribution changed. Amazon previously said the movie was a green streaming media.
