Detroit - When the first official visit weekend ended, there were a few Michigan football coaches taking a 45-minute excursion east of Wayne State’s Soundmind Soundbody Camp to see the local prospects. But long ago, Bryce Underwood, the first recruit in 2025, attended the same camp.
From events like that, Underwood looked at him, watching him debut in just a few months, so Underwood looked into his eyes. Now that the spring ball has come, Underwood has completed all 15 practices, where is he in his development?
Although he didn’t coach the quarterback, as a previous extensive game, Michigan offensive pass game coordinator and wide receiver coach Ron Bellamy knew the importance of having a good quarterback. From Tom Brady and Drew Henson to John Navarre, he played with Ann Arbor and some good plays.
But what impressed Bellamy wasn't just his cannon, it was his brain and leadership.
"He's smart, man. The way Bryce attacks football - he's the first, the last," Bellamy said. "He's a sponge. He always wants to learn. Hang around the receiver. Great leader. An incredible leader for a 17-year-old. We all know the physical attributes, but I think he's on the right path. It's definitely on the right path."
Underwood is likely to end up being the starting quarterback for the Wolverines this season, but he will not be able to rest in peace. Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene is not available during the spring dance and they are expected to compete with him in the fall camp.
While many may see Underwood as a zero game of corn and blue, there is still a ripple effect, especially at the local level. It's too early to say whether his signing with Michigan will eventually help the Wolverines win top catchers nationwide, but Underwood from Belleville, Michigan joins the hometown team, something internal recruiters can't help but notice.
Michigan is accepting several local recipients, from 2026 Detroit (Michigan) CASS technician CJ Sadler to 2027 Harper Woods (MICH.) five-star Dakota Dakota Guerrant. Bellamy believes that not only works for his hometown team, he will also open fire behind Underwood, and thinks that state players will attract more attention.
"You're proud of it," Bellamy said. "The locals saw it.
Michigan will continue to recruit between the official visit weekends between now and June 22, as well as through many local camps in Ann Arbor. As for Underwood, summer conditions are in progress, while autumn training camps will take place throughout August.
