Google is introducing a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that embeds chatbot functionality more firmly into its search engines, aiming to give users a conversation with experts an experience.
"AI Mode" was available in the U.S. on Tuesday and appears in Google's search bar.
The change, unveiled at the company’s annual developer conference in Mountain View, California, is part of the tech giant to stay competitive with Chatgpt and other AI services, which has the potential to strip Google of its dominance of online search.
The company also announced plans for its own augmented reality glasses and said it plans to offer subscription AI tools.
Google-Parent Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said that incorporating the company’s Gemini chatbot into its search range marks a “new phase in the transfer of AI platforms”.
"With more advanced reasoning, you can come up with longer and more complex queries," Pichai told the audience.
The company's venture into AI-powered glasses for more than a decade, with its "Google Everses" eventually erupting with smart glasses.
New Google Glasses are being developed with glasses retailers Warby Parker and Gentle Monster and will be equipped with cameras, microphones and speakers.
With new efforts, Google hopes to compete with Meta's AI-powered glasses made with Ray-Ban.
The company said it expects to start building new products later this year.
Leo Gebbie, chief analyst and director of America at CCS Insight, said Google is expected to wrap AI more closely.
He said he believes the chatbot will help minimize the number of pages users have to filter, while also allowing people to ask more complex queries.
"For end users, this should mean less time browsing the network itself and spend more time talking to Google's AI tools," he said.
Gebbie added that any updates to Google Search are crucial, because the search business contributes the vast majority of Google's revenue.
When the judge ruled that it was searching for a monopoly, the company had a court battle in the United States over potential changes in its business and issued an announcement.
Google has been successful in trying to incorporate more AI into its services recently.
The AI overview feature released by Google last year at its developer conference provides a summary of AI-generated and currently appears at the top of search results.
It initially caused laughs from users who posted some weird responses they received, just like one user suggests that non-toxic glue can help cheese stick to the pizza.
Another extensive cycle of response points to geologists suggesting humans eat a rock a day.
A Google spokesman said at the time that these were "siloed examples."
Mr Pichai said on Tuesday that the AI Overview now receives 1.5 billion use per month in more than 200 countries and regions.
In its largest markets (US and India), AI overview drives more than 10% of the types of doubt shown, Pichai said.
"This is one of the most successful launches in the past decade," he added.
