Google launches AI tools to protect chromium users from scams

Google announced Thursday that it will launch new AI-driven defense capabilities to help fight scams against Chrome. The tech giant will start using Gemini Nano (its on-board large language model (LLM) on desktop to protect users from online scams. It also launched a new AI-driven warning for Chrome on Android to help users understand spam notifications.

Google notes that Chrome's Safe Browsing Mode on Chrome enhances protection mode, providing the highest level of protection, and users offer twice as much protection as possible against phishing and other online threats compared to the browser's standard protection mode. Now, Google will use Gemini Nano to provide enhanced protection users with an additional layer of defense against online scams.

Google says this device's approach will immediately gain insight into risky websites to protect users from scams, including those that have never been seen before.

"Gemini Nano's LLM is perfect for this purpose because it can refine the diverse, complex nature of the website, thus helping us adapt to new scam strategies faster," Google said in a blog post.

The company is already using this AI-powered defense to protect users from remote technical support claims. Google plans to expand this defense to Android devices and more types of scams in the future.

As for the new AI-driven warning, Google notes that if you enable notifications, the risk of the Scammy website can be beyond the site itself through notifications. Malicious websites can use notifications to try to trick you, which is why Chrome can now help you understand the reasons for malicious, spam, or misleading notifications on Android.

Now, you will get a warning when Chrome's device learning model marks notifications as possible scams. You can choose to unsubscribe or view blocked content. If you think the warning is showing an error, you can allow all future notifications for the site.

As part of today’s announcement, Google shares that it has been using AI to stop search searches and detect and block hundreds of millions of scam results every day. Google says its AI-driven scam detection system helps capture 20 times the number of scammy pages.

For example, Google sees an increase in bad actors who pretend to be airline customer service agents and scam people seeking help. The company said it reduced these scams by more than 80%, reducing the risk of users experiencing fraudster phone numbers while searching.
