Tulsi Gabbard, director of the National Intelligence Corporation, fired two top officials of the National Intelligence Commission (NIC) weeks after the council released its assessment, contradicting Donald Trump's reason for using the Alien Enemies Act and due process for allegedly ousting gang members in Venezuelan.
Mike Collins served as acting chairman of the National Intelligence Commission before his deputy Maria Langan-Riekhof was fired. Each of them has over 25 years of intelligence experience.
The Gabbard office said in an email Wednesday that the two were fired for opposing opposition from the U.S. president without providing an example.
"The directors are working with President Trump to end the weaponization and politicization of the intelligence community," the office said.
The shooting comes after the NIC released a declassified memorandum and found no coordination between the Venezuelan government and the Tren de Aragua gang. The Trump administration believes this is a reason to invoke the Alien Enemy Act and expel Venezuelan immigrants. The intelligence assessment was published in response to a request for public records from the Press Freedom Foundation.
The latest round of intelligence shooting is something Gabbard and her team aim to eliminate prejudice and inefficiency within the intelligence community. On Twitter/X, Gabbard Deputy Chief of Staff Alexa Henning said that NIC officials she called "Biden Holdovers" were removed from office for "politicized intelligence."
While it is not uncommon for the new administration to replace senior officials with its own draft pick, the firing of two intelligence officials who had served both presidents has attracted attention. Jim Himes, a senior Democrat in Connecticut, said he did not see any details to explain the firing.
"There is no evidence to justify the dismissal, and the labor force can only conclude that their work depends on producing an analysis consistent with the president's political agenda, rather than being real and apolitical," Shimes said in a statement.
Although the National Intelligence Commission plays a key role in the country’s spy services, while not widely known, it helps to bring together intelligence from different agencies to participate in a comprehensive assessment of the use of White House and national security officials.
Collins is considered one of the top authorities in East Asia. Langan-Riekhof served as a senior analyst and director of the CIA’s strategic insights department and is an expert in the Middle East.
Neither attempt to achieve both failed on Wednesday. The CIA refused to comment publicly, citing personnel matters.
Her office said Gabbard is also integrating some of the intelligence community's main operations and is now moving some of the CIA's offices to buildings in the office of the Director of the National Intelligence Agency (ODNI). These include the National Intelligence Commission and staff preparing the President’s daily summary, which reports to the President with the most important intelligence and national security information.

This move will give Gabbard more direct control over the summary. While abstracts are already the responsibility of ODNI, the CIA has long played an important role in preparation, providing physical infrastructure and staffing that must be moved to ODNI or recreated.
Gabbard oversees and coordinates the work of 18 federal intelligence agencies. She has been working to reshape the intelligence community – eliminating the diversity, equity and inclusion programs under Trump’s orders and creating a task force to examine ways to cut costs and consider whether material related to Covid-19 and other topics has been explained.
Gabbard also vowed to investigate the intelligence leak and end what she said was an abuse of political goals.
