Illinois Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield), who represents the region, issued a statement:
“When we send our kids down in the morning, we should always believe that they will be safely home at the end of the day. For some families, today’s beliefs have been shaken after the tragedy of Chatham Ynot.
"I'm heartbroken - there's actually no words that explain the feeling of the Chatham community and will feel it over the course of days, weeks and months. I want to thank the first responders, law enforcement and volunteers. My office and I'm ready to help in any way. I've been in touch with local authorities and will be relevant along with the relevant information."
Chatham Village Trustee Kristen Chiaro posted on Facebook that Chatham Baptist Church will be a unity for families with children in the center. Near the scene, Walnut Street between Park Street and Gordon Avenue closed traffic.
Chatham is about 12 miles south of Springfield, Sangamon County. Don't confuse it with the Chicago community on the south side of Chatham.
