A Florida man is suing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for alleging that he suffered "permanent catastrophic injury" after riding a water park slide at Walt Disney World Resort in 2021.
Eugene Strickland seeks $50,000 in damages from the theme park giant in a May 29 lawsuit filed in Orange County, Florida. The damage stems from Strickland's claims while riding on July 31, 2021 at Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park (DISP).
"Our client was seriously injured on Disney's Blizzard Beach," said John Morgan, founder of the personal injury law firm Morgan and Morgan & Morgan, representing Strickland, in a statement shared with CBS MoneyWatch. "He filed a lawsuit alleging that the defendants' safety measures and supervision caused these injuries. We are seeking justice for him and working to hold Disney accountable for their alleged negligence."
Strickland, who weighed 334 pounds at the time of the incident, claimed in the lawsuit that his description on the Disney World website cited his Disney internal tube due to the "exciting speed" of the car, in which he claimed he was disengaged from the Disney internal tube.
"Vanished in the black hole and descended 50 feet downhill," the description of the high-speed water ride on the park's website says. "Run in the dark and catch up with the big splash."
The lawsuit alleges that Strickland landed forcefully on the plastic surface of the slide after being separated from the inner tube, causing him to maintain "severe physical harm" such as "disability, scars, disfigurement." Other so-called harms include "mental pain" and "loss of ability to enjoy life".
Strickland claimed that the theme park was wrong due to injury, and he said in the lawsuit that Disney was responsible for warning him of dangerous conditions on the DDD high-speed water slide. ”
Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CBS MoneyWatch.
Strickland is seeking legal losses and a jury trial.
