Fiverr wants show workers to offload some of this work to AI

Gig Marketplace Fiverr wants to allow freelancers to physically train AI on their work and use it to automate future work.

At an event on Tuesday, Fiverr announced several new efforts to attract gig workers to its platform and provide them with generated AI tools. Perhaps the most ambitious plan is a plan that will provide freelancers with voiceovers, graphic design and some related work to be able to train AI’s content and charge customers for access.

Fiverr CEO Micha Kaufman proposed the move to ensure that show workers “get the right credibility and compensation while providing them with unprecedented tools to expand their work.”

“It’s about making our freelancer irreplaceable, not outdated,” Kaufman said in a statement. “We built (these new features) to ensure that creators stay at the center of the creative economy.”

The emergence of cheap, widely used AI Tech has suffered a huge blow to the performance market. A recent report found that AI tools like Image Generator and Openai’s Chatgpt have led to less competition for roles, with writers, programmers and application developers bearing the brunt.

These jobs may not be returned. In an independent, older study, which looked at the performance market movement for nine months, the researchers concluded that the trend to replace freelancers only accelerated over time.

Fiverr's grand plan to solve this problem is what is called the "personal AI creation model", which will allow contractors to configure AI models trained in previous works such as artworks or codes, and set usage prices. Freelancers will retain ownership of the work generated by their models, including lyrics, illustrations, marketing copy and digital advertising design, Fiverr said.

"Buyers have complete flexibility to choose freelancers' AI-generated works, artificially created work or a seamless blend of the two," Fiverr spokesperson told TechCrunch via email. "Customers can pay and download AI-generated assets immediately , or ask freelancers for other editors. They can also connect freelancers of AI-generated works to give examples or inspiration and ask for specific services.”

At the time of Wednesday’s release, only “thousands” of “top” freelancers were able to create models. Fiverr says it uses "high-level language models" and "generating frameworks" to drive functionality - which is not free. The price of creating models for personal AI is $25 per month.

The show workers may not have a choice they have many options. Choosing not to participate may put them at a competitive disadvantage in a punitive department. Many gig workers face financial insecurity, covering expenses and paying bills, and lack the benefits and legal protections provided to full-time employees.

Fiverr emphasizes that it does not use Gig Worker data to train internal models (for example, models that may compete with workers) and can disable individual AI to create models at any time.

"Creative work and AI model freelancer trains belong to them." "Fiver may collect aggregated anonymous usage data just to improve platform performance and user experience, but never copy or replicate or relate to freelancer's creativity," the spokesperson continued. Work or Service Competition (…), if freelancers disable their AI to create models, they will have access to anything that model generation and no one else can access it.”

Fiverr contractors who create models using personal AI will also get Fiverr's "personal AI assistant" ($29 per month or Fiverr's seller plus a quality plan), which is actually the chatbot that the customer service chatbot chats with the contractor Chatbot customer. Fiverr says customizable assistants can “provide actionable business insights” and “handle routine tasks”, such as responding on behalf of contractors when they are offline.

Given the sensitivity of some of these interactions, gig workers may be wary of allowing them to be trained. Fiverr hasn't said whether users can control which specific chat personal AI assistants are used for fine-tuning.

"() Personal Assistant analyzed each freelancer's profile, performances and past client communications," the spokesperson said. "Freebrews can review and adjust their personal assistant's response during the setup process. After setting up, freelancers Professionals can further configure their personal assistant's behavior by defining specific topics that trigger freelancers, and can add or remove questions and answers that they want their personal AI assistant to answer or not to answer."

Fiverr complements its AI product launch, Fiverr unveiled a plan that will go live on Thursday and said it will provide Fiverr shares with the “best performing” contractor, which is publicly traded. Fiverr will not say Tuesday how to determine the winners, nor how many shares they expect to earn or how much spending they spend.

Fiverr's market capitalization was approximately $1.16 billion as of Friday. The performance of shares has been rising and falling over the past year, but lately Fiverr's fate has become better.
