The Auburn Tigers began the NCAA Baseball Championship with a 9-5 victory over the Blue Devils in Central Connecticut on Friday night. It was a packed house in Plains Park and saw the Tigers win. However, the game is not easy.
Auburn started 4-0, but starting pitcher Cam Tilly had struggled long ago before being released. Tilly allowed two runs before being released by Carson Myers in the second inning. The four runs that the Tigers scored proved to be the difference. Auburn will now play in the CT at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Here are five key statistics, which are key to winning Auburn on Friday night.
Although Tilly didn't give up any runs in the first inning, it was a struggle for the starting pitcher. Blue Devils are able to load the base before Auburn escapes without giving up any runs. He gave up on two runs before the second run and gave up on Miles. The Blue Devils started the second inning when outfielder Gianno Merlonghi singled to the right field. Tilly then goes Antonio Ducatelli and Kyle Gordon to get the base loading. Receiver Matt Falk then drove single in Ducatelli and Merlonghi to score Auburn 4-2. Tilly will then give way to Myers to end the night on the mound. In less than two innings, Tilly gave up five hits and walked away two batsmen.
Tilly struggled early on in need of Auburn Bats in the game. They helped the pitchers with a 4-0 lead. The Tigers loaded the base to get all objects moving. Eric Guevara and Cooper McMurray left, between Ike Irish, hitting twice. Lucas Steele, Eric Snow and Bub Terrell scored a single and led 4-0.
Myers made six innings after freeing Tilly. He faced 27 batsmen and beat nine in the game. He did allow six hits, but gave up on one run. "I thought when Carson was playing the ball, he was getting better and better in every inning. I think he was a huge difference in the ball game tonight, let's stabilize us, let's reset, settle down, settle down the pace of the game," said after the game. Parker Carlson will enter the game in the eighth inning to end the game.
The game was four quarters when the Tigers hit the ball in the third inning. Steele will hit a home run, making Auburn the lead they will never give up. "Yes, I mean, I think I'm leading the game, and by then, it's just to attract basic runners," Steele said. "The goal is to never play a home run, but, I know, I know it's a lot of motivation to be able to take the lead and keep the lead throughout the game." Auburn then adds three more games to Eric Snow, Chase Fralick and Bub Terrell to finish the game 8-4.
Bub Terrell played a big game for the Tigers on Friday night. Terrell had two hits and three RBIs to help Auburn win. He also ran for a run and walked to the base. His final step defeat was his escape in Game 4, resulting in snowfall scoring.
