When it comes to the U.S. men's national team, manager Mauricio Pochettino doesn't work completely with the blank canvas. The core of the team that reached the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup remains.
But with the 2026 World Cup soccer match that was co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, only over a year away, the Argentines feel forgiven because they feel eager to remove parts of the picture while filling in some of their own additions. This is the tragic performance in the CONCACAF National League last March, in which the US was in third place in the semifinals and Canada fell to Panama, which could be done with the manager's thinking process. Given the fresh display, there may be an increasing sense of urgency to view other options.
Now, Pochettino did perform some experiments during CNL. Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna has become a rising player who can provide more offensive solutions for American managers. Ibid Charlotte Football forward Patrick Agyemang, Vancouver white Brian White also got some look.
The situation, even beyond the result, may open the door for some new blood.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup will begin next month and people like Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie will not be available due to Juventus' club World Cup commitments. If Giovanni Reyna hasn't extracted himself from the Borussia Dortmund Purgatory, so is he. In early June, there was also a friendly match against Türkiye and Switzerland, giving Pochettino a chance to attract some new players.
With that in mind, here are some potential candidates who have not been viewed under Pochettino, but have provided us with reasons to call and made us a 60-man initial roster for football.
Aaronson has played a variety of roles in the midfield of Utrecht this season, sometimes withdrawing more and sometimes more advanced, but usually leaning to the left side of the midfield. Anyway, Aaronson's eight goals and four assists this season not only helped Utrecht finish fourth (enough to get a qualifying round for the UEFA Europa League), but recently received a nomination for Johan Cruyff's Player of the Year. Next season, he will return to Frankfurt to better match the remaining shots of the first team.
As for USMNT, Aaronson's versatility should get along well with Pochettino, and McKenny's presumptive absence could create a vacancy within a certain game time. Like everyone on this list, he also made a temporary roster of 60 people for Jinbei.
Blackmon is an evening plant. He is a product of the American university system, played for the University of Pacific and began his career at the right back of the LAFC. He was asked to participate in the USMNT at the January camp in 2021, but his injury prevented him from playing.
Blackmon gradually became center with Vancouver and performed well this season, winning the Miami Inter Miami CF at Caps' Concacaf Championships Cup. Blackmon stands out from his back as a special force, among the defenders, ranked 99th percentile in the MLS in the completed progressive passes, according to ESPN Research.
On the USMNT side, Blackmon's rise may also be at the best time, as contributions to the center of the US are inconsistent. But USMNT is not the only team to notice Blackmon's performance this season. Sources told ESPN that Canada has been asking about the possibility of Black Gate playing for Canmnt.
In 2021, Berhalter appears to be leaving the MLS after a season with Austin Football Club, but moving to Vancouver gives him a new life. And, no player who benefited more from the CONCACAF Champions League show than Berhalter, who played a role in sending Herons in the semifinals. The game can also show that Berhalter arrives at the box at the right time to run outside and is able to complete offensive moves.
Like Aaronson, Berhalter faces a crowded midfielder, especially those like Johnny Cardoso return after missing the CNL. But the Vancouver midfielder's ability in a fixed game - the pain of the United States - should also keep him in good shape.
Among Sullivan's family, Cavan has received much of the attention recently given his plan to move to Manchester City. But brother Quinn quietly held an impressive first three months in Philadelphia. He assisted with seven goals, tied for second in the MLS and scored 30 key passes, the eighth highest in the league. All of this put the league in second place in the Eastern Conference.
Sullivan is usually occupied by a Christian pulsation on the left, but the depth is increasing, especially given Sullivan's dribble ability and his creativity, especially especially considering Sullivan's ability. He also showed abilities that have emerged in other areas of the field.
The only question now: Will Pochettino give him a chance?
Outside, Willie's season has some turmoil. Initially, he was loaned to Ligue 1 Side Strasbourg, but a pair of injuries (knee tendinitis and a separate shoulder) were limited to six league matches, and the loan was shortened. Wiley made so much progress on his subsequent loan at the UK Championships in Watford that another interim deal for his next season will return to the Hornets.
As for the United States, both Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest were lacking during the CNL, indicating that there is still not much depth at the defender position. This is especially true in terms of the ability to move forward and the power of Willy. Currently, he has the opportunity to leave his mark.
