The film was filmed in the spring of 1945 on Amrum Island on the German coast. In the last days of the war, 12-year-old Nanning bravely hunted SEALs, fishing at night and working on nearby farms to help his mother feed his family. Despite the hardships, life on a beautiful, wind-walking island is almost like heaven. But when peace finally comes, it reveals a deeper threat: the enemy is much closer than he thought.
The film is based on the childhood of German actor, writer and director Hark Bohm, who wrote the original script, which was then rewritten and directed by Akin.
In a statement, Akin talked about the impact of the film on the film. "When Huck first told me this story, the movies that came to mind were 'bike thieves' and 'shoeshine' and 'shoeshine'," he said. "The scene of Nanning searching for driftwood at night reminded me of Charles Laughton's 'hunter'. The whole movie should breathe the spirit of Rob Reiner's My Stand, so my film nurtured became the first personal connection to the film."
Jasper Billerbeck starred with Laura Tonke, Lisa Hagmeister, Kian Köppke, Lars Jessen, Detlev Buck, Jan Georg Schütte, Matthiasschweightöfer and Diane Kruger.
The producer is similar to Herman Weigel. The film was produced by Bombero International and Warner Bros. Germany and Rialto Film. Karl Walter Lindenlaub is the director of photography and Andrew Bird is the editor.
Akin broke in 2004 with Heat-on-On, who won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. "The Edge of Heaven" (2007) won the best script in Cannes, and "Soul Kitchen" (2009) won the Special Jury Award in Venice. "The Cut" (2014) premiered in the competition in Venice. Fade (2017) won Best Actress for Kruger and the Golden Globe Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. "The Golden Glove" (2019) premiered worldwide at the Berlin Film Festival. His next film, Rheingold (2022), attracted more than one million enrollments in Germany.
