Beijing-based sales clothing REDIAND has gained global rights to “Bhumi Mother Bhumi”, a drama starring Bingbing, a fan of famous Malaysian film producer Chong Keat Aun.
The company has released an exclusive product when buyers head to the upcoming Cannes film market.
The film focuses on Hong Im, a widowed farmer who lives a double life - caring for rice fields during the day and providing ritual therapists for villagers at night. When faced with revelations about her husband’s death, she struggles to maintain balance while seeking solutions for herself and her children.
The cast also includes Taiwan’s Bai Run-Yin (Golden Horse champion “Old Fox”) and Hong Kong’s Natalie Hsu (“Suk Mung”), the son and daughter of Hong Im, respectively.
Chong has established himself as the rise of Malaysian cinemas. His debut Story of the Southern Island (2020) earned him the Golden Horse Awards Best New Director honor and the Philipsey Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. His premiere of Midsummer Snow in Venice (2023) won the Firebird Award in Hong Kong, while his recent work, Pawanen for Baby Pawanen, bowed at the Tokyo International Film Festival last year.
“We have been following the film evolution of Chong’s films since he was acclaimed. We are also completely fascinated by Fan Bingbing’s career-defined performance by Fan Bingbing,” said Meng Xie, CEO of Rediance. “We are expected to share this superb work with global film acting and industry partners.”
Fan’s past honors include “Lost in Beijing,” “Foshan,” and “I am not Madame Bovary.” Although Fan is still one of China's most well-known stars, "Bhumi Mother Bhumi" sees her undergoing a physical transformation in the role. "There isn't a good-looking character in the movie. Even during filming, some of my friends wouldn't know me when they came to visit me," she revealed at a press conference last year. "I think it shows the commitment of the entire production team to help me become Bhumi's mother."
The film was produced by Janji Pictures from Malaysia and Southern Islet Pictures from Italy in Volos. Producers include Wong Kew Soon ("Midsummer Snow"), Stefano Centini ("Head or Tail", "Magellan") and Zoey Teng ("Pavane for Babies"). Walter Fasano is known for his editorial work "Call Me with Your Name", and he is an editorial consultant.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Rediance's Slate also includes Déni Oumar Pitsaev's critics Week documentary "Imago" and Zhaoguang Luo and Shuhan Liao in the short film competition.
