Garrett Workman made the most of his opportunities in his first college baseball season.
Now, he has paid off for it.
On Tuesday, May 20, Southwest Athletic Conference called Florida's first year A&M pitcher the freshman of the year.
Workman's nod was SWAC's top freshman, from being a North Florida Christian's high school season with a corner pitcher of the year.
Workers played a big role in the Rush team this season, with Caleb Granger starting Friday night after last year's annual SWAC pitcher Caleb Granger suffered an elbow injury at the end of the April season.
On the mound, the workers scored an 8-4 victory with the Rattlebacks. The lefty scored an average of 3.92 runs and 67 strikeouts in 80.1 innings.
This season, FAMU is the third best team in SWAC, with Carson Kelly and Jesus Campa joining the workers and entering the top ten in the league's statistics rankings.
Other FAMU baseball players who received SWAC playoff honors are catcher Broedy Poppell and third base Jay Campbell. Both entered the All-SWAC first team.
The Diamondbacks finished 30-23 in the regular season with an 11-game winning streak, becoming FAMU’s third team, winning 30 games before the playoffs.
FAMU will open the SWAC Championship as two seeds and face the No. 7 seed South on Wednesday, May 21 at 1pm at Birmingham.
Fans can watch the double elimination tournament of eight teams on the SWAC digital network via YouTube.
The SWAC Championship will be Sunday, May 25 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. ESPN Plus will stream the game.
