FA Cup Final: Manchester City's free thrower 'decided on the court'

LONDON - Pep Guardiola admits he believes Erling Haaland beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final and revealed that Omar Marmoush will step up his efforts in the face of his miss.

Guardiola's side defeated 1-0 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday as the Palace lifted the first major trophy in history.

City has a chance to cancel Eberechi Eze’s opener after Tyrick Mitchell’s challenge to Bernardo Silva.

Heyland initially took the ball down and then passed it to Marmoush.

"They decided to be on the court," Guardiola said.

"I don't know. I didn't talk to them. I thought he (Haaland) wanted to accept. These are their business.

"The moment of the free kick, the punishment, it's the feeling and their feeling. They decided Omar was ready to take it. Henderson did a great rescue."

Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney said in a BBC radio that strikers were less typical of getting free throws.

"Erling Haaland is a world-class striker, but when we talk about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, they can't have lost that ball," Rooney said.

“That’s what separates two players from Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe from those players. They are selfish and they want to score points for each game.

"When he (Haaland) missed the opportunity, I think you could see it affect him and it really affects him. Maybe the idea of wanting to punish at Wembley might be too much for him. You never know, he is alone."

Henderson seemed lucky to hit the ball outside his area as Haaland chased the palace's defense.

The incident has been reviewed by VAR but believes he did not block a clear goal opportunity and escaped the red card.

Guardiola was asked about the decision but refused to comment.

"Ask Val and the referee," he said.

Guardiola and Henderson also participated in the dispute after the final whistle.

The two exchanged words on the court during the palace celebrations, and Guardiola seemed to scold the England goalkeeper for wasting time.

"He defends his position, we defend our position," Guardiola said.

"Everyone can do whatever they want. We have to score goals. Congratulations to Henderson and the Palace, because they have a very good defense and we can't score."
