Bafta nominations will be announced on Wednesday, the latest milestone in an unpredictable awards season that has brought some surprises.

The British Academy's shortlist could be a strong indicator for the Oscars. Last year, the performances of the winners in the six categories at the two awards shows were perfectly matched.

This year's Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 2, and there is currently no consensus on which film will ultimately win Best Picture.

Different experts believe that "The Brutalist", "Emilia Pérez", "Anora", "Conclave" and "Wicked" will win the top prize. All five currently have a viable path to victory.

But just because the shortlist has been announced, that doesn't mean there won't be surprises when the final nominations are announced.

The Baftas have six nominations in each acting category, one more than the Oscars, which means there's extra room for some fun surprises.

The front-runners in the Best Actress race with the best chance of getting into the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) include Demi Moore (The Substance) as a TV aerobics instructor whose relevance is fading, and Carla Sofia Gascón (Emilia Perez) plays a newly transformed woman who was once a drug lord.

Other death certificates are Cynthia Erivo ("Wicked") as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and McGee Madison (Anora), who plays a New York stripper who falls in love with the son of a wealthy Russian.

But there are still chances to get nominated, e.g. Marianne Jean-Baptiste (the brutal truth), for her portrayal of an irritable woman battling depression, and saoirse ronan (The Outrun) stars a young alcoholic returning to Scotland.

Kate Winslet (Lee) also enters this category for his role as reporter Lee Miller, as well amy adams (Night Mother) and Nicole Kidman (baby girl). Nominated as Marissa Abel, This will be a special surprise for the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black.

Meanwhile, the Best Actor category is widely expected to be dominated by e.g. Adrien Brody (Brutalism) Building a new life in America as an architect in Budapest, and Timothée Chalamet (Completely Unknown) The conflict between the portrayal of a young Bob Dylan and his love of folk music and rock 'n' roll.

Coleman Domingo (star) was recognized for playing a prison inmate who participated in a performing arts program, while sebastian stan "The Apprentice" may be nominated for its portrayal of Donald Trump's early years as a real estate mogul.

UK front-runners include Daniel Craig (queer), playing a gay man who ventures into the jungle in search of telepathic plants, and ralph fiennes (conclave), the cardinals who oversee the campaign to elect a new pope.

But don’t bet that BAFTA will also support an outsider or two, e.g. Hugh Grant (pagan), Dev Patel (Monkey Man), Kingsley Ben Adir (Bob Marley: A Love) and jude law (torch). They're both British, and if any of them were to get a surprise nomination, the Baftas would be the way to go.

At the same time, leaders may emerge in the support category, e.g. Zoe Saldana (Emilia Perez), ariana grande (evil), Kieran Culkin (real pain) and Yura Borisov (Anora).

But a particular focus of the supporting cast competition is Denzel Washington ("Gladiator II") will be nominated. Although Washington had a decades-long acting career and nine Oscars (two of which he won), he was never nominated for a BAFTA award.

A few years ago, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts changed the voting system in some major categories to increase diversity.

after it comes No minority actors were nominated in 2020, A white actress, Margot Robbie, was even nominated twice for two different movies.

The introduction of the jury system the following year meant that members' votes could only decide two of the six seats in the acting categories, with juries deciding the other four.

So the 2021 shortlists are certainly more diverse, but they're also severely disconnected from the rest of the awards season (although the final winners are roughly on par with the Oscars).

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts continued to use the jury system in the following years, although the number of jury seats was reduced to three.

This year, however, things have changed.

While the jury helped compile this year's longlist, final nominations in most major categories such as acting are now decided solely by BAFTA members.

As a result, nominations are more likely to be similar to other awards shows, with fewer outliers on the shortlist than in recent years.

BAFTA nominations will be announced at 12:00 GMT at BAFTA headquarters in central London by Mia McKenna Bruce and Will Sharpe.
