Elon Musk said Tuesday that AI development could be stuck in power generation issues as the technology industry builds larger and larger data centers.
Musk told CNBC in an interview that his AI startup Xai plans to be a large Givat facility outside Memphis, Tennessee. He said the facility will be completed within six to nine months. According to the Department of Energy, GIWAT is equivalent to the power capacity of ordinary American nuclear power plants.
Musk said that with the expansion, AI faces three main limitations: chips, transformers and power generation. Transformers are used to reduce the voltage of electricity produced by power plants so that it can be used with computers.
"When we solve the transformer shortage, there will be a basic power generation shortage," Musk told CNBC's David Faber. "My guess is that people may start to face challenges by the end of next year (the end of next year).
Alphabet's Google division warned in February that the U.S. is facing a power crisis as the U.S. plays against China to take advantage of its advantage in AI. Caroline Golin, head of global energy market development at Google, said that after achieving renewable energy, Google began to research nuclear energy. The output of wind and solar energy depends on weather conditions.
Google has encountered a very serious reality that we don't have enough capacity to power data centers in the short term and then it's possible in the long run. ”
Musk said on Tuesday that China's power generation is much larger than ours. “China’s power generation looks like a rocket in orbit, and the U.S. power generation is flat.” Tesla The CEO said.
Musk's XAI is using natural gas turbines to help its Colossus data center in Memphis. Environmental advocates accused XAI of violating the Clean Air Act and allowing the use of gas turbines to require “primary sources of air pollution” without mitigation technology or licenses.
Utilities, e.g. Domination of energy Tell investors about the recent earnings call that while anxiety in the market suggests that the technology sector may reduce concerns about a possible recession, they see no evidence of a slowdown in data center demand. Dominion serves the world's largest data center market in Northern Virginia.
but Zodiac energy Warnings say that despite the strong demand, some of the utilities’ forecasts have been exaggerated as developers purchased data centers in multiple jurisdictions. Constellation is the largest nuclear power plant operator in the United States
"I just have to tell you, I think the burden is overstated," CEO Joe Dominguez said on the Electric Company's first-quarter earnings call. "We need to twitch the brakes here."
