Elon Musk received applause from President Donald Trump's cabinet, preparing to withdraw from his post from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
"You're treated unfairly," Trump told Musk at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. "But the vast majority of people in this country are very respectful and thankful. The whole room can be said strongly. It's really a huge help. You've opened a lot of eyes to what you can do. We just want to thank you very much."
"You were invited to stay for the long term you wanted," Trump added as he burst into applause in Musk's room. "At some point, I think he wanted to go back to his car and his family's home."
Musk has been a public leader at Doge since the administration began in January, with the leadership team seeking government overspending, fraud and mismanagement through various federal agencies, which has been repeatedly praised by Trump and his administration.

The tech billionaire leading SpaceX and Tesla was hired as “special government employees,” a role initiated by Congress in 1962, allowing executives or legislative departments to hire temporary employees for specific short-term initiatives.
Data from the Government Ethics Office shows that special government employees can "no more than 130 days in the federal government" in the federal government. Musk's 130-day time frame begins with the inauguration and is dry on May 30.
White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles told the New York Post Tuesday that Musk no longer works from the White House regularly.

"I didn't meet him in person, but talked to him on the phone, but that was the same effect," Wells told the media. "He didn't physically come here, but it didn't matter."

Musk said at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that Dogg has now saved $160 billion in money through efforts to prune government fat, and celebrated the government's achievements.
"The American people voted for safe borders, safe cities and wise spending," Musk said. "That's what they got. The huge amount has been done in the first hundred days. As everyone said, that's much more than what has been achieved in any administration before.

The tech billionaire wore two Trump hats during the meeting, saying: "Mr. President, they said I wear a lot of hats," he said. “Even my hat has a hat. ”

Doge is a temporary inter-departmental organization designed to reduce and simplify the federal government. The group itself will be dissolved on July 4, 2026, according to Trump's executive order.

Musk and Trump once previewed Musk's role is temporary and will end in the next few weeks.

"You are technically a special government employee, you should be 130 days," Fox News's Bret Baier asked in an exclusive interview with the Manog leader in March. "You're going to keep going, or do you think that's what you're going to do?"
Musk replied: "I think we will do most of the work we need to reduce the deficit in that time frame."
Trump also told the media in March that he would keep Musk “as long as I can keep him,” but “he has a big company to run.”
