El Salvador arrests prominent human rights lawyer on corruption charges

Salvador San Salvador - El Salvador arrested an anti-corruption lawyer from one of the country's most important human rights organizations and accused her of participating in misappropriation of funds while in government positions earlier in her career.

Cristosal, the group of Ruth Eleonora López, condemned the arrest one day earlier on Monday and was described as a "short-term execution of missing" and asked the government to provide information about its whereabouts.

Cristosal has been one of the most outspoken critics of President Nayib Bukele's policies, especially the ongoing three-year emergency, where the state suspends some of the fundamental rights related to due process while the government fights the country's gangs.

The measure limits the right to collect, understand the rights and obtain the rights of lawyers. It extends 15 days, with no charges. In a state of emergency, about 85,000 people were arrested.

López is the head of the anti-corruption department of Cristosal, which has filed dozens of reports and filed legal lawsuits related to government corruption.

Christo Salz said Lopez's team "repeatedly documented and condemned El Salvador's lack of due process respect and the use of government agencies to curb key voices." "We also reveal torture, ill-treatment and death in prisons."

Christo Sals said in a statement that neither Lopez's family nor her legal team knew where she was taken after she moved her from her home around 11 p.m. Sunday.

"The authorities' refusal to disclose her location or allow access to her legal representative is a flagrant violation of due process, legal defense and international standards for judicial protection," Christo Sals said.

The Attorney General's Office did not respond to a request for comment regarding Lopez's arrest. The president's office declined to comment.

The alleged misconduct can be traced back to the President of the Supreme Election Tribunal Eugenio Chicas (2014-2019) during her tenure as president of Salvador Sánchez Cerén.

Chicas moved from the court to Sánchez Cerén's cabinet and served as a member of Congress. Last November, he and some of his relatives were convicted of illegal abundance between 2009 and 2021.

Chicas was detained in February and is now being prosecuted for illegal abundance.

The Attorney General's Office claims that Lopez was involved in Chicas' embezzlement.
