Edwards, Timberwolves overcame the fighters in Game 3 to lead 2-1 series | Basketball News

Anthony Edwards fell a high of 36 points, Julius Randle scored 24 points in a triple-double, and the Minnesota Timberwolves regained their home advantage in a second-round victory against the Golden State Warriors with a 102-97 victory in the second round of playoff series against the Golden State Warriors.

Game 4 of the Western Conference Best Series is scheduled to be held in San Francisco on Monday night, with the sixth-seeded Timberwolves leading 2-1.

Jimmy Butler III scored a team-high 33 points on Saturday at the seventh seed Golden State on Saturday, without star guard Stephen Curry and tight left hamstrings.

The intense game made the Warriors hold tightly within 84-82, then played two matches against defensive Ace Draymond Green in 18 seconds in the last five minutes.

The Timberwolves got control from there, taking three times from Jaden McDaniels, with Rudy Gobert's three-pointer, who created a six-point mat for visitors at 2:05.

"We're definitely going to take some pictures," Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. "We're stopping. We've been stopping in the regular season. We just won the ball possession battle at clutch time. We're just not-we didn't return it to the ball with cheap turnovers. We didn't give up that many or any second Chance Chance chance."

Edwards' three-pointer was his fifth game, except for overcoming Minnesota's second straight win to win the game with a score of 1:19.

Edwards' 36 points were his second-largest in the playoffs, second only to 43 points in Game 4 against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. He shot 13 times in 28 shots on Saturday.

"The team's defense is really good," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "Pinning them in 102. It's a nice number. But Randall and Edwards did go both in the second half, and that's the key. We can't control them completely, especially on the fourth time, and that's the difference."

Randle added his 24 points with 10 rebounds, a high of 12 assists and three steals, as they beat the hosts by 43.9% to 43.2% in the defensive battle.

"He has so much strength and determination," Finch said of Randall. "He is going out early and being aggressive, his body and rebounding play a ton of energy on the defensive end. He undoubtedly played a full game for us."

McDaniels added 15 points, while Gobert scored a top 13 rebounds for Minnesota, a 2-1 game against the Lakers in a 4-1 first-round series.

Butler has the most points on 12-for-26 shots since Butler scored 35 times in the Eastern Conference Finals in Boston in 2023.

"Man, Jimmy is incredible," Kerr said. "He did control the game for us and put us in a winning position and we couldn't finish it. But he was great all night."

Jonathan Kuminga worked hard to increase game time as the Warriors hoped to beat Curry's regular score with a playoff career-high 30 points to support Butler. In the first nine games at Golden State, he has only 43 games in total.

“JK (Jonathan Kuminga) played one of the best games of his life,” Kerr said. "It's great to see. You can see the necessity of him in this game, especially without Stephen (curry)."

Friend Buddy Hield made 4 of 8 shots on 3-pointers, with the Warriors’ majority of 14 points, while Brandin Podziemski collected the team’s highest eight rebounds on one night of his 1-for-10 shot.

Celtics bury the Knicks in Game 3

In an earlier playoff game Saturday, Jayson Tatum finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, with the Boston Celtics defeating host New York Knicks 115-93 in Game 3 of its second round of Eastern Conference Series.

Payton Pritchard scored a team-high 23 points on the bench in Boston, who lowered the Knicks' lead to 2-1 in the Knicks' seventh season. Jaylen Brown added 19 points, while Derrick White scored 17 points.

Jalen Brunson scored 27 points on 9 of 21 shots, leading the Knicks. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 21 points and 15 rebounds.

After struggling to score in the first two games of the series, the Celtics found the rhythm offensively. Boston has a total shooting percentage of 48.2% (40 out of 40), a 3-point shooting percentage of 50% (20 out of 40), and New York has a 40% (32 out of 32) and 20% (5 out of 25), while outside the ARC.

"They got some clean looks early on, and they saw it in; it gave them confidence. And then it was hard to shut them down," Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We have to have a bigger understanding. We can't let missed shots get out of (our) defensive toughness. We have to bounce back."

Tatum made a basket that ranked Boston in the top 2:40. He assisted Al Horford with three-pointers in the next game, with Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla being out of reach for the starter for the rest of the game.

"It's a fun part. You won't get into the journey to make it easy," Mazzulla said. "It's dark, but it's great. You just have to take advantage of your own darkness, and that's it."

The fourth game of the Seven Best Series will be played in New York on Monday.
