Donald Trump and Elon Musk

Donald Trump and Elon Musk dropped them on social media for everyone to see. Although the impact of tariffs begins to show, new federal employment data are expected to reflect primarily economic stability. There is a risk of closure of at least 200 family planning clinics across the country.

This is what you need to know today.

Republican solidarity could become collateral damage as Trump and Musk fight

Yesterday, Presidents Donald Trump and Elon Musk attacked and threatened online and in the world, a boiling battle between the world's most powerful and the world's richest.

Tensions grew a few days ago when Musk criticized the bill's Trump agenda as "annoyingly abominable." Trump finally responded yesterday, with reporters at the Oval Office saying: "Elon knows the internal functioning of the bill." The president suggested that Musk, who owns Tesla, was upset that the bill cuts tax credits to incentivize purchases of electric vehicles. Musk and his allies are excited about the suggestion.

Then, the online poke begins. Musk suggested Trump would lose the 2024 election without Musk's massive donations. Trump hints federal government Can Ending billions of dollars in contracts The companies with Musk are mainly SpaceX and Tesla. In response, Musk claimed that the president was in the so-called "Epstein Archives." Musk also suggested Trump's improvisation. The attack is not over.

It is now clear that the fanaticism between the two has died, and the collateral damage caused in hatred can last for weeks, months, or even years. Republicans are trapped in the middle.

In interviews with Republican lawmakers and agents with connections to Congress, a clear theme emerged: Republicans should be afraid of crossing sideways with Trump or Musk. Congressional leadership positions, midterm elections, and even the fate of Trump’s agenda bill.

Just a few months ago, Musk said he would invest $100 million in a Trump-related political committee. A Musk adviser said the money will never come, and it will not be now. "He doesn't give F--- about Republicans, RNCs, house seats or anything else," the consultant said. "He will blow them up; he will."

Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican who represents Nebraska, talked about the battle: “There is a good passage in the proverb: ‘Avoid fighting.’ I stay away from this.”

Employment data may reflect economic stability

The Bureau of Statistics will release its latest employment data from May, which is likely to indicate that some economic stability already exists. The forecast for a new payroll that was added last month was 120,000, which most economists think is a healthy number. But this still represents the least monthly jobs since February, below the 12-month average of about 150,000.

Meanwhile, other data have pointed out signs of changing economies in the face of unprecedented tariffs from President Donald Trump. The Labor Department’s weekly unemployment claims report released yesterday was higher than expected. Private Payroll Processor ADP reports that the total monthly jobs have been weakest since March 2023. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said the upcoming inflation readings could reflect price increases due to tariffs. Read the full story here.

Fear lockdown in family planning clinics across the country

At least 20 family planning clinics have been closed or closed as health care organizations face the same pressure as nearly all U.S. providers, such as low insurance rates, understaffing and rising costs. But the situation could get worse as the Trump administration’s targeted cuts threaten to further plunge the organization into uncertainty.

Earlier this year, federal funds for more than 100 clinics were frozen. And written into the House Republican-backed Trump agenda, the bill is a rule that will reduce Medicaid reimbursement to meet any nonprofit that meets three criteria, which parents do. This means that if the bill passes, 200 of the approximately 600 family planning sites nationwide will be at risk.

Family Planning has taken steps to adapt, such as combining locations in certain states and closing clinics in states that have historically voted for abortion rights, such as Vermont. The resulting landscape leaves fewer healthcare options for patients. Read the full story here.

Employee Choice: Battle Night in China

Wrestler Zombie Dragon (Top) reacted when he tried to nail Coldplay during a decade of Zhongwang wrestling match in Beijing on May 24, 2025.

Today, with a lot of attention to the trade war and U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, it is refreshing to watch the unique exports of the U.S. to China: Professional wrestling. On a recent Saturday night in Beijing, I participated in the "Ten Years Battle" organized by the Kingdom of China Wrestling, one of the few professional wrestling organizations here. It has all the logos of a professional wrestling experience: rubber outfits, body blowing, and yes, some chairs were smashed too.

What I didn't expect was that the person behind it was a 37-year-old American named Adrian Gomez, who would be the opposite of supercharged performances, usually affiliated with promoters like WWE-style wrestling and Vince McMahon. Easy-going and plain Gomez politely solves everything from sound checks to media passes. Then, he smiled there as the music thrilled and flashed lights, as there was wrestling chaos and noisy audience swelling in the room. He has been working tonight for ten years.

This is not a story about trade or geopolitics. This is Glance of a small, dedicated community of professional wrestlerstheir growing legion of Chinese fans, and a former English teacher's determination becomes unlikely to work in China. - Janis Mackey Frayer, Beijing-based correspondent
