The Ministry of Government Efficiency is continuing its attempt to expand its coverage beyond the executive branch agencies, this time trying to embed an independent legislative regulator to discover waste, fraud and abuse in the government.

But the U.S. Office of Government Responsibility, a legislative entity that helps audit government spending and proposes methods to improve efficiency, and on Friday pointed out that the GAO was not bound by the president's executive order, rejecting the request.

To the high request lists President Trump's executive order to create Doge on January 20, although its name is not a formal institution.

Doge's requirements for GAO and its responses are first reported by Notus.

A GAO spokesman confirmed Doge's publicity and reiterated that "as a legislative body, the GAO is not subject to the execution order and therefore rejected any request to assign Doge teams to GAO."

GAO leadership said in an announcement to employees released Friday afternoon that their response sent a letter to agent Doge Amy Gleason and notification members of Congress, and a copy of the notification shared with NPR by an unauthorized employee who spoke publicly.

GAO releases reports regularly that highlight ways to improve government efficiency, such as the May 13 review of federal programs, whose dispersed, overlapping or duplicate actions could save more than $100 billion in spending. However, so far, there is little overlap between Gao's work and Doge's behavior.

Gerry Connolly, a senior Democrat who oversees the House Oversight Committee, D-VA. Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-VA. “Doge’s attempt to invade an independent, nonpartisan legislative branch is a direct attack on the divine separation of power in our country,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly. “The Governor cannot and cannot obtain any opportunity from the GAO. Oversight Democrats are closely monitoring this situation and lag behind Gao’s recognized status as a key legislative branch.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Doge's attempt to place the team at GAO.

This is not the first time Doge is trying to embed staff into organizations outside of the administration. In recent weeks, Doge representatives have been with several privately formed nonprofit organizations that have been created and received federal funding but are not considered government agencies, as well as at least one nonprofit that has no relationship with Congress.

Additionally, President Trump suddenly fired a Congressional librarian a year before his term ended last week - raising concerns among members of Congress, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Doge attempted to assign a team to conduct public broadcasting business in April for public broadcasting to conduct public broadcasting on the day after Trump tried to fire three board members, according to a lawsuit filed by the CPB.

The CPB denied the claim, citing federal law saying the organization “will not be an agency or establishment of the U.S. government.”

It's even more extreme when Doge's overrevealing engages with private nonprofits that have received federal grants but are not assigned a team by Congress.

In a April 15 contact with the Vera Institute leadership, Doge representatives said Doge's outreach was about interrogating "every institute or agency with congressional funds."

After Vera staff told Mens Representatives that the Justice Department terminated the organization’s grant, he said his request to embed Vera was “invalid”.
